Plantman Posted March 10, 2006 Report Share Posted March 10, 2006 hi mitch either one will be fine but gravel is bigger and will have a better hold when you are doing initial planting. for sand, the fish may easily disturb the sand and the root will be expose. but i have seen people sucessfully use sand for their plants. if use both, after some time of siphoning, the gravel will sink below. more inportant is that the base needs to be between 3 to 4 inches thick.
