FranAndMark
Hi all Apologies for repeating my question, but we're setting up a new tank and would like your feedback/advice on which of the following fish can coexist with Discus: -Neon tetras -Red tailed sharks -Clown Loaches -Coolie Loaches -Angel fish -Swordtails -Siamese fighters -Rams -Dwarf Gouramis. Cheers Fran and Mark.
antwan
Hello FranAndMark. Ok so out of your list the following can coexist in my opinion: neons kuhli loaches swordtails and definately rams sorry but im not totally sure about the others. I would have thought angels would be alright, but ive heard a lot on this forum that they dont get on well.
Faran
There's been years of rumours that angels give discus worms. Some say it happens, others say it won't. I keep angels separate from my discus anyways. As for the rest of the fish, as long as they're slow moving and can handle the high temperatures that discus live in you should be fine. I'd like to recommend cardinal tetras rather than neons as they handle the heat better (from the Amazon as well). Your dwarf cichlids will do well, advise keeping away from the gouramis and red tailed shark. If you;re getting into discus, come by for a visit. We're in Upper Hutt and it'll be worth the drive
Aquagold
Be careful with the Neons too as I remember one of our original pairs eating some we put in the comunity tank. These fish were saucer size though.
sharn
RTS have known to be quite nippy with other fish that have reds or the same species so i would only put one of them in with caution. neons, like everyone else said, even though theyre cheaper they dont grow as big i think and can become fish fingers for your prized discus. the khulis and clowns make great discus tank mates IMO DG, i have heard, are normally disease infested, nematodes or something like that, ive never kept them for that reason but i assume they wouldnt work too well in a discus tank alot of people have the suspicion about angels and discus, but the truth is all fish can have diseases that they can pass onto your fish, having said that though most store bought angels do have nasties attactched so if you do want to keep them together (alot of people have had great success with them) make sure you get them from reputable breeders. also people have problems with feeding times as angels are very quick and can be bullies while discus graze slowly. have a read of http://www.simplydiscus.com/forum/showt ... hp?t=46920 for some good views on the subject. arent swordtails hard water fish? not sure how well theyd do with the higher temps but if they did breed they would provide some yummy snacks! not sure bout fighters really, i wouldnt try it. and rams make great tankmates! have some myself and theyre not as agro as say triple reds etc. just make sure you qaurentine ALL your fish before you add them to the discus tank, you dont want anything getting in and upsetting the delicate balance. also if you wish to add angels worm them first. doesnt hurt to worm discus as well and alot of people say they bulk up if done regularly. HTH!
evil_elmo
well for me i keep my discus with clown loachers, neons, black neons and lemon tetras and they all are happy have tired with red tail black shark but they get very nasty when they grow big also the same with most gouramis like kissing, golden..etc
