Ace Posted February 16, 2006 Report Share Posted February 16, 2006 Hi, I am hoping someone can answer my query. I have a 12 year old black axolotl. Recently I have noticed a couple of small patches of yellowy dicolouration on her head and body. The skin in these areas look completely normal except for the colour. I have tried rubbing the areas gently with a skewer but it doesn't come away. She is acting normally and eating well. There have been no changes in her tank environment or in her diet. I took her to the vet and they suggested dunking her in seawater for 30seconds twice a day but there was no improvement. I'm not sure whether she has a fungal infection or whether it could be age spots as she is fairly old. If anyone can shed some light on this for me, that'd be great! Thanks. sharn Posted February 16, 2006 Report Share Posted February 16, 2006 first things first your vet- well he doesnt know too much about axies lol. is she a wildtype or melanoid? if shes wildtype they can get some wierd colouring, normally greyish patches though so a pic would definatly help. does it look like shes peeling sort of? the ratio for salt baths is 2tsp-1L of water (some use more some use less), heres the link to the salt site http://www.axolotl.org/health.htm, it tells you the ratio further down, of course if its not a skin problem salt wont work. being a old girl it could just be age, but do pay us a visit on www.axolotl.org and ask there on the forums (best axie site on the net i reckun), joan or ed may have some further advice for what may be the causes. have you checked your water parameters also? Her skin is not peeling, it looks absolutely normal except for the colour. I haven't checked the water parameters as there has been no change in her environment or conditions. sharn Posted February 22, 2006 Report Share Posted February 22, 2006 melanoids are pure black with no gold rings in the eyes (if your in nz you will most likely not have one, im a huge axie freak and have never come across one in all my investigations ) they have a very velvety apperance see http://www.axolotl.org/genetics.htm for colour pics. wildtypes vary in their colours, some from a poo green/olive to a rusty red to a nearly black but they have gold rings around their eyes. seeing as shes 12 years old shes just under the average life span of approx 15 years so i would put it down to age aswell, just keep an eye on her just incase anything develops. i havent heard of age spots personally but its always a possibility!!
