Krib Question

GeeTee

Recommended Posts

My Kribs just had their 2nd batch of eggs,1st ones didn't hatch and were eaten,2nd lot hatched and disappeared(eaten again I guess).

This time though the female got very aggressive to the male.I have read that if the eggs or fry disappear they blame each other and get aggressive towards each other.

My question is do they (she )get over it or is their relationship over??

What to do?

Thanks Mystic,I separated them for a couple of days and have now put them back together and they seem to be mates again.

I have to keep them, they are my wifes favourite fish in the tank, keeps her a little interested in the keeping.

Could be a way to get another tank, tell her the Kribs need a tank of their own to breed.I'll try that.

I have two pair that spawn for me every 9 days and have for the last 4 months (HOW MANY DO YOU WANT) and the parents suprisingly enough BOTH defend the fry to the end.

Check out the photo of the Family at

It could also be that you have a pair that are carrying an aggressive trait as I have only previously observed the female chasing off the male, with him hiding until he's taken from the tank.

Nice tank,is it any wonder they are at it all the time,They're in paradise.

Nothing else in the tank with them?

My male has killed 2 females over a period of 6 months, and now the tables have turned and he is being beatan up.They are in a tank maybe 30 litres at the moment 'till they sort themselves out properly, they're not beating each other up which is good.

The male has also started to move some gravel about, never know.

Maybe thats a reason they will not settle for you Geetee - 30 Litres is not really alot of room to think about raising 50 plus fry. The best success I have had was when they are in a long 200litres with other fish say platties or something that makes them feel secure and king of the roost maybe. Also I reckon 2inch PVC tube makes a better cave for the fish - its not great to look at but it can be hidden. Its not quite as easy Ive found in a 100 litres without peaceful swimmers. They seem a lot more nervy but there are other things that could be happining as well - the main one i think is not enuff privacy - to much noise and people round the nest!! Good luck they certainly are a gorgeous fish when they're hot

Thanks for the compliment.

Yes they are in (I suppose) fishy paradise but thats all they are getting.

The tank is on 600x300x300mm and at 27 degrees C all the time.

I find that the "flower Pot" as it is is quite accepable to them even though there are rocks at the side of the pot behind the JAVA FERN.

I have left this tank set up specifically for them and for visitors to see as it is an experience to the "uninitiated" to see the breeding process working "IN NATURE".

Dont give up though, if you would like a pair of NON AGGRESSIVE KRIBS let me know.

Tanksman, the Kribs are only in the small tank to see if they can sort them selves out, they are normally in a 100 litre with some other cichlids. They will be put back soon.

I originally had the male in there(small tank) by himself to let his tail grow back. After she unsettled him everything in the tank was picking on him.

AMAZONIAN,what ph do your fish do this well in?

Mine is at 7.8 constantly but I think Billaney breeds them at about that ph.

I'll just keep trying.

I'd also love to take you up on the offer of a pair of fish but am guessing you are from NZ like most on this site,I'm from OZ

Thank you though

Well I gave them a couple more days to sort themselves out, refurnished the tank and returned them.

They are now defending their cave again and swim freely around the tank without the bully of the tank even bothering them.

There is a lot to be said about moving the tank around.

Here is a picture of the tank now the only fish I didn't get in was the female krib. But she is there and happy.
