ARGH! Escaping fish!

I just got home from work and one of my fish was on the floor!!!!!!! I put it back in the tank, it was still alive but must have been out of the water for a wee while, and he's not very happy :( I hope he doesnt die! I dont understand how they're getting out tho? I have a sheet of glass on the top with a small hole for the filter tube to go thru and thats it.. I'm frightened they're all gonna jump out now.. what should I do??? I hope that my little ones that went missing didnt jump out. I havent seen any bodies on the floor, but then my dogs have been in here, so there wouldnt be any trace of them. Oh this is so sad!

Hi Angel

You'd be surprised with the power of some fish (my friends 15cm arowana knocked the glass lid off his tank and we found him on the floor alive). What type of fish are they? If they are small it's quite likely that they would have jumped out of the filter hole. Hope this helps.

hey :) They're called Inanga - grown up whitebait. I have a feeling they're catching a ride on the bubbles from the filter actually.. I'm sitting here watching them swim thru the bubbles.. I knew I should have got a waterfall one instead lol!

Have you a dog that may have ripped a duvet?

If so, grab some of the fill from that and pack around the exit.

It is just a polyester type stuff.

Don't need to go to the expense of buying filter floss.

You say you have a sheet of glass over the top.

But does it rest on the braces at the ends of the tank?

If so, it prolly means you have a jump target area the full length of the tank.

ie. that small gap between the tank and the lid.

Split a hose lengthwise and slip over the edge of the tank, nearby closing up the gap.

Inanga definately don't like being out of water like that, and I think that being a scaleless fish it's life could be severly curtailed.

Keep an eye on it, as if it gets whitespot you'll find it difficult to treat as the others will, or could be, affected by the necessary medication.

Goodluck with the fish.

How big are they??

Thanks for that Alan - i've had no escapees last night. The fish are about 10-12cm long.. they're having breakfast at the moment and it's real cute..diving all over the place. I've collected just about enough rain water overnight to replace the water in the tank - it's cloudier than ever.

I think what i'll do today is start my aquascaping and get it all done at once so *hopefully* it wont have to be done again!
