Bottom line is I know the pure CO2 bottle system is better. No time consumption, etc. etc. etc. and I know the yeast system is cheap, etc. etc . etc. but cause I dont have the cash right now (alls gone on setting upa new tank) can somone who has used both systems can you please rate out of 100% the effectiveness of both systems, its seems effectiveness depends on the diffuer system used. How many 2lt coke bottles would I need for a 240 litre tank. and it seems the best diffuser from all that I read is a spiral thing-a-magig ere you don't need a bubble counter. Can some one please post a pick of this. O. Yes I promise to put up pics of my DIY system due the fast my wifes a chemistry teacher therefore she helping setup one with proper stoppers and stuff......

P.S. Thanks Ballistic, Tom and all you other guys with the invaluable advice in setting up my new tank....:bow::bow::bow::bow::bow::bow::bow::bow::bow:  :bow::bow::bow:

i Used to have a single 2.2L Coke Bottle running on a 200l plant tank, and got great results. My suggestion, is what i would have done if i had not decided to biuld a fishroom and move everything out there instead, would be put together a twin system, and have a Y valve connect them, then run the output airline straight into the input of a cannister filter, thats how i found most effective for diffusing the Co2. My mixures where far more concentrated than others use though, and i replaced them every 3-4 weeks.

  • 2 weeks later...

i use a BOC standard mig welding fitting, a throw together solenoid unit from NORGREN and hire a BOC gas bottle for $9 a month.

I screwed around with yeast for ages and eventually came to the conclusion that, although i had learnt a lot, i didn't want to do it any more.

These days i only have to play with the setup once every year or two or when i set up a new tank.

the other nice thing about it is that you have 5000 psi of pressure to play with, so you can put your diffuser at the bottom of the tank and not have to worry about the c02 finding an easier way out. because of this high amount of pressure you can split the supply between more than one tank.

cost of gas tap: $140. solenoid approx $100. extra fittings to join it all up about another $30.

(and trust me, if you go down this path you do want the solenoid)
