wasp
You can use carbon or not, a matter of choice. If you put it in the skimmer, be careful not to block the riser tube it is in, which will raise the water level in the skimmer and make it skim very "wet". What does carbon do? It is porous and therefore absorbs things. In a reef tank it will absorb many undesireable little nasties that are floating in the water, thereby making the water nice and clear, and the tank more healthy. chimera
just dont overdo the carbon, maybe 100 grams per 100 litres?

chimera
depends on your current water quality, anywhere from every 4 - 8 weeks. personally i change about every 6-8 weeks.
