chimera
From http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/viewtopic.php?t=5259... I need to increase Magnesium. I have Mg chips in my calcium reactor but over the past 6 months it's still hovering around 1100 odd. I really want to increase to natural seawater levels (1300 - 1500) Other than using something like Salifert Magnesium chips, how else can this be increased? lduncan
Around 2Kg of magnesium chloride should raise it from 1100 to 1500 (assuming 1000Litre tank volume). Or around 4Kg of epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) would have the same effect. Either of these are often used to correct mag levels, sometime a mix of both is used to try and add chloride in proportion to sulfate. chimera
is it ok to add in one hit or do i need to do it gradually?
cracker
Chimera, I will have all the stuff you need by the end of the week. High grade magnesium powder along with Mg Sulphate. VERY CHEAP. Call me on Friday, hopefully Ive got it. Cheers
cracker
Reactors WILL NOT keep up with MG completely. Calcium usually isn't a problem.
Pies
Do it slowly. don't raise mg to high, its fuel for algae outbreaks. From what I understand natural seawater on the reefs is about 1250-1300. Also remember if using epson salts it will change your salinity, so check it when your adding the salts. I just use the dolmite (?) chips in my CA reactor, manage to maintain 1350 no problem. Pie
cracker
Pie, are you running standard chips or some other imported brand. Or is it just the amount of water you have maybe? 1350 is perfect! how long has it run at 1350 with no top ups?
lduncan
Reactors WILL NOT keep up with MG completely. Calcium usually isn't a problem. It can if the right proportion of magnesium carbonate is included (or added) to the media. I've never bothered getting mag over 1200. cracker
1200 is probably more than enough anyway. Takapuna, (Waitemata harbour reads 1200 regularly). I still prefer to run at 1350. gives the SPS an extra amount just in case they want a growth spurt!!
Pies
The media I am using comes from ZeovitNZ, its made by the Zeovit company. I use it at approx 15% of my reactor volume, it lasts about as long as the media. I've maintained 1300+ mg since I added my reactor, so about 2.5 years at a guess. My reactor is a large, it holds about 10 litres of media. The NSW down here measures about 1200. GT on UR runs its at 1480, he sais anything more than 1480 and he gets hair algae. he belives the higer mg helps corals grow much faster and hold their colour better. I believe the first statement, not sure about the 2nd. Pie
chimera
November test results - pH looks a little out at 8.44 but I havent calibrated my pH monitor for a while. Will do this later and try again. Mg a little low, have added some Magnesium to boost this up a bit. kH a tad high for running with zeovit. In terms of water chemistry, everything else Im happy with (except nutrient levels of course!) but Im happy knowing that these are slowly coming down. I expected around January before I got some decent acro colouration so if all goes well I should be on target, assuming zeovit does its thing!
