Caper
1 of the neons that was bought for me yesterday...uh...Friday. I noticed this evening he wasn't swimming around like the rest...kept checking on him...he was staying near the bottom of tank...nothing else unusual....but just checked on him...floating...dead. I immediately removed him...checked water: ammonia 0 pH 7.2 nitrite .3 When I took him out I have him a good look, couldn't see anything that looked "wrong". Wondering now...I was going to do my water change tomorrow instead of Monday...will this cause too much stress for the other new neon & the new ottos??? Also, now that I have in my tank 1 goldfish 1 red wag platy 3 black neons 4 neons 2 ottos Is my tank overstocked? I thought with that many I should change my water every week now...what do you folks think? All help is appreciated

suphew
It's always a good idea to do weekly 10% or so water changes anyway. Neons can be difficult to keep, they should be easy but poor breeding over the last few years has led to weak stock, not sure if you have the same problem there but seems to be wide spread here in NZ. Unless you start to lose other fish I wouldn't worry about it, there are lots of reasons a fish will die that have nothing to do with your setup, it may have been damaged in the pet shop, might have been old when you got it and just died of old age, maybe just a weak fish etc etc
Caper
Thanks suphew I think I might let the change go until tomorrow after all...ah...Monday that is! Give the new fishies another day to settle in. Would you say that my tank is overstocked now? I'm hoping that'll be able to get another tank soon...but not sure when. suphew
90 liters aye? As long as your goldfish isn't large I think your load is okay. Just be aware the goldfish will get large, they are very messy, and might eat your other fish once they will fit into its mouth.
