Phillz
OK 99% of my guppy fry have turned out female.......I am ready to give/sell most of them. I don't know which one to keep though, 1/2 have no colouration or markings; the other 1/2 have little black marks on their tail, some identicle, some slightly different. So, should I keep the non-coloured ones or the ones with slight markings? I am still on the lookout for a worthwhile male, to start breeding with. Pegasus
You could consider holding onto say the best 6 or so of the best females (if they are virgins).. and you know the bloodline they came from. Then once you find a decent male (or males).. you can set some trio's up and go from there. It's no guarantee you will get good fish from the mix .. but you might get some decent future breeders after a few generations. Bill. Phillz
Well......feeling a lil bit stink now  3 of my 8 "virgin" females are males........And here I was thinking I had sorted them out! Just goes to show how much I have to learn! Now my "Virgin" females will be preggo by these blokes......who have spots........not what I had planned at all! Where oh where am I going to start to get my awesome Blue/green snakeskin strain started........oh just dreaming!!!
Pegasus
Philz asked: Where oh where am I going to start to get my awesome Blue/green snakeskin strain started........oh just dreaming!!! You ask.. "Are you just dreaming..?" If the "original" parents were nothing like what you are hoping to achieve... then yes.. you may be dreaming As the article in the Guppy Express outlined.. You need the "basic" ingredients (genes).. in the fish to "start" with.. otherwise you could be trying for years to get "any" results that come near to your expectations. The father of the brood you have will give you a good indication of what genes he holds.. and so will the mother to some extent.. but even then there is no guarantee of the outcome unless you know (without doubt).. what bloodline the parents came from... and she could be carrying genes from several matings.. or from "her" original parents.. or grandparents. Look at the MALES of the brood you have. If you have say six or more that look identcal... then chances are they are going to be good future breeding stock.. and the same applies to the females... if you have several that are "identical".. (not just grey or what have you.. but identical in some distinct feature)... then provided they are at least three or four months old and of good size and quality.. and kept in a virgin state.. then they too could be your future breeding stock.. but this all depends on if the fish have the looks you are seeking. Phillz
Thamks for that Bill. My Dream Guppy is a Blue/green snakeskin.......but alas, I have not found anything of the sort to start out with. So I thought I would make a start with what I had....get some practice in LOL. The dad was a LFS buy, and a yellow snakeskin, with a wannabe topsword , The mum was a LFS buy too, and was one of those goldie coloured girls. So I had expected a few snakeskins at least......but no! The males out of that batch are all different colours, with a flouro orange parts and black spots......now the dad had 2 black spots, so looks like thats all he passed on. So back to the drawing board for me. The guppies will go in the big tank, untill I can find the stock I want to start with. Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmm....anyone got and bule/green snakeskin guppies they want to part with LOL
