HummingBird
I'm getting some convicts soon and I was wondering if you guys would be able to answer a couple of questions I have about them (couldn't find the answers on google). 1) Are they ok with plants (or vice versa)? The tank I'm getting is already heavily planted. 2) Would they be alright with a few Silver Sharks as well? My LFS owner said they would be because the Sharks would be too fast for them to catch. livebearer_breeder
Hey Eric, i just read your email, apologies i have been really busy with NCEA. ok, well firstly i would say no to the Sharks, the Owner musnt have a clue cause convicts can move bloody fast if they want to, you will most likley find dead sharks down the track. Yes they love planted tanks, i have mine in heavily planted tanks and i think that is the main reason for the success with breeding them. Although they do breed like rabbits mine were laying eggs every 6-7 days, and with plants it makes them feel more secure and happy, i spose, as with most fish. I had my Convicts in a 160l tank with heaps of guppys and platys, gouramis, a single angel, a couple of lineatus, two pictus, 4 corys and a few bristlenose and never had a problem. Travis & Vicki
the new tank i have the cichlids have destroyed the plants, what they could'nt up root they ate any way. I put the "gardening" from my other tank in theirs to give them something to do  They are in with 2 keyholes and 2 fireheads( Vieja Synspilum)
HummingBird
'salright Shae, I know what you mean (definately glad to be free of it now ) Sounds like it may depend on the actual Convicts as to whether or not they'll be ok with plants - I'm glad I'm getting some of Shae's So the Sharks wouldn't be ok with them but Angels and Gouramis would? Is that just because they're more defensive and can hold their own?
livebearer_breeder
I had one really pussy angel thats why they were ok together. gouramis are fine, they dont tedn to take any notice od each other, id say tetras and the likes would go ok aswell, especially in a heavily planted tank, you can get away with more. HummingBird
hmm well I guess I'll see how they go in my tank, here's hoping!
HummingBird
They're going to be the only occupants of the tank (I may put a couple of upside down catfish in with them, but they'll just hide) it's just the plants that I have any concern for! Travis & Vicki
You have good cause to be concerned for the plants if your convicts are anything like mine
Travis & Vicki
the only plants i put in their tank are the cuttings from my weekly gardening in the community tank
HummingBird
I was just thinking, Shae you normally feed yours live/frozen foods right? Mystic and T&V, what do you feed yours? Maybe that makes a difference as to whether or not they feel like munching on plants.

HummingBird
Maybe [the type of food they're fed] makes a difference as to whether or not they feel like munching on plants.

livebearer_breeder
I have yur ones Shae, and they eat the plants juss like anyothers. Maybe they didnt like that taste of yur ones! lol! Maybe its just cause i keep all my fish well fed. I feed my fish Livefoods not frozen, Live bloodworms, mossy, daphny, white worms, brineshrimp, microworms etc i dont like to feed my fish flake or frozen foods. Travis & Vicki
just did a head count, looks like mine are getting plenty of live food at the moment too, out of the 6 neons 1 rummy rose 2 danios, all but 1 neon and 1 danio must have been slow swimmers :-?
