FACEAnthrax
Just had my first attempt at making a home made basking "rock". Only a small scale one for first go, next come a full enclosure one! Sorry the pictures were taken with a phone camera. Day 1 Day 2 Day 4 I'd love to see everyone elses. Lets get posting
Sophia
very cool indeed - what are they coated with?
FACEAnthrax
very cool indeed - what are they coated with? For that one I coated the polystyrene in 2 layers of grey mortar (most people use grout but I didn't think there was much difference), I also mixed with some pva in it to help it adhere better, then once all dry I coated it with matte mod podge to seal it fully. It's solid as a rock, think it would quite happily survive a drop on the floor, not that I'd like to test . Decided against paints for my first try, will probably paint next time. Also mixing in coloured sands doesn't work out as well as you'd think. Tried red sand and came out looking like, well, something from a rear end . Guess it's a bit of trial and error with that lol . Sophia
is it heavy enough to sink so it could be used as a fish cave?
FACEAnthrax
is it heavy enough to sink so it could be used as a fish cave? Hmm that's a good question. I think the polystyrene might have too much buoyancy, but a few more coats of mortar might make all the difference. But you could always use something other than polystyrene as the base shape then mortar that? I just use it cos it doesn't require anything else but a knife to shape.
