Bananalobster
Hi there, I have recently aquired a 90L x 30W x 40H tank and would love some advice and suggestions on fish and decor. I have had a little colony of electric yellows in a 4ft in the past, but would love to try something different.. Perhaps something that looks after their babies and has interesting behaviour. I love the look of N. Pulcher (daffodil?) and their behaviour sounds really neat. Would they work in this sized tank? If so how many would be ideal? Any info and experiences with them I would love to hear about. I also like the look of that fine white silica sand, and was thinking limestone slates or maybe schist of some kind to make caves with, and would also buffer the PH. I would love some suggestions and also any pictures of your current set ups.
ryanjury
Pulchers would be nice in there, I would get 6 or so and let them grow out and hope that they all get along and breed or you at least get a pair, get a breeding net or spare tank as well so that if any are getting a hard time then you can remove them. My only other advice would be to goto a good source to get some descent ones because they can and will cross with brichardi there are tons of dodgy ones around. I am currently trying to get some good pulchers off a guy I know for myself and a mate so hopefully that works out. You can use the silica sand if you want just chuck some coral rock or limestone rock or any of the various other buffering things in the tank to keep things stable. I tried silica sand once and it went brown and was just hard work, I gave up on it eventually but every tank is different so can't confirm if this will happen to you. Bananalobster
Thanks! Wow 6, I thought that would be a few too many? I am quite happy sticking to just one species and having a little family unit. I didnt realise the silica sand was alot of hard work.. I just liked the look of it and thought it would be nice for the fish to dig in.. What else makes a good substrate? I have a lake nearby I could just take sand from.. Could look quite natural I guess. Thankyou for the heads up on the pulchers, yeah they are very similar to the brichardi I will have to keep an eye out, what are some good indicators that it is infact a hybrid? I want to be able to pass on the babies to others so dont want to end up with hybrid fish. Is anyone on here breeding these at the moment? Or breeding anything else similar that would be suitable? Bananalobster
I have seen some Neolamprologus leleupi for sale, are these suitable for my tank? Do they have the same kind of behaviour?
ichthus
I have 3 leleupi in my tank...they're cool. One builds a huge gravel pile in the middle trying to clear out a corner of the tank, gosh knows why...there are other spots to nest! They haven't bred yet - but then I have 3 Julidochromis Trans. in there who would apparently eat any babies anyway. The leleupi have nice colours, my brichardi's are obviously less colourful but have developed nice fins. I would imagine you could mix some of these smaller Tangs in a tank your size... Leleupi would be good but probably not in a 3fter unless you had 1 of them or a confirmed pair they can be pretty nasty towards each other I started off with 4 in my 350L 5ft and 2 paired off and killed the other 2.. Bananalobster
Ouch! Okay might stick with the N. pulcher or brichardi then. Deffinitely want something that will be safe in the 3ft. If I got a group of younger ones and a pair forms will the others have to be removed? Or will they tolerate eachother if raised from fry?
