nudge
I have 3 blue dolphins from ryan that i am growing out. They will be goin in a 5ft male hap/peacock tank. I am wondering at what size could i put these dolphins in the 5ftr. They are prob about 4cm. There is nothing to nasty or predatory in my main tank. Coupla snotty peacocks and a 10+ cm kadango and 1 dem and 1 albino auratus which are a little aggro. I don't think they would get eaten but I wonder if it may be a bit to boisterous for them as there is a lot of chasing and the peacocks can be a bit aggro. Should i maybe hold off until they are a bit bigger round the 5cm mark, or throw them in and see what happens. The moori get the water changed every 2nd day in the grow out tank to help with the growing, do you think putting them in the main tank now may slow down their growth? ryanjury
Hard to say what is going to happen mate.. Maybe try them in a breeding net first if the fish go phyco and try and eat them then wait a bit, it is always best to wait until they are far bigger than you think, it only takes a moment of the fish being stunned or swimming fast for the bigger ones to hit them and then they're gone. If you put them in the bigger tank they will grow slower, they will be the smaller fish in the pecking order, get less food etc it is just what happens.. bigfishhead
Hmm... smaller fish will grow slow in big tank.. Rayn can you put it into details a bit? I am worried about some of my juniors in my big tank.... Is it just because they may not get food properly? not enough food? any other reason? I was told biger tank + resonable frequent water change will make fish grow faster... I cant really see any serious aggro going on in there. My smaller fish gets food alright. probably a little bit over feed.... So do you think they'd better put into a grow up tank rather than in the big tank? I have found smaller fish will always grow slower and get less colour etc with bigger more dominant fish in the tank. The smaller fish will get less food and not be as dominant, I think that dominance has something to do with how fast they grow it definitely has allot to do with how well the colour when they mature. Fish also secrete a growth hormone to ensure that they grow the biggest and strongest, the more bigger fish you have in the tank the more the smaller fish are affected by it. This is very common in discus and most people who are serious do huge water changes to remove this hormone along with any other waste. You are always better to grow fish out in other tanks they will grow faster, bigger and more colourful, but sometimes we are limited by the tanks we have etc.
bigfishhead
I see, good to know Ryan. Yes, I am limited by number of tanks. I am totally like get possesed and crazy about fishkeeping cichlids now... looks like I do need to get a few new tanks and setup a fishroom...
