Powerhead covers

I've been talking with my grandmother who is slowly gaining interest in the fish keep hobby, she's come up with an idea I think would be quite neat. She wants to use something like clay to mould covers for my powerheads which she'll then design to look like rock or driftwood.

I have a few questions about getting her set up.

What type of clay should we use? Missing a kiln so it would need to be something that can be set in the oven or just as easily.

Is there anything better suited then clay?

What kind of paint would be suitable for the task?

It would be great for her to have a hobby she enjoys and I like the sound of the idea, the powerheads look a bit ugly in there.

Any ideas and advice greatly appreciated.
