hello all im after any info about shipping rather large cichlids the largest is 23cm i have thought about paying for them to get to me by a freight plane :o going to cost acouple of hundred but id rather pay that than risk a over night courier!!!!

i have scored some heavy duty bags from auzzie my mum got them from an asain breeder as they just have the best fish supplys ever :D

the bags are just under a metre high and about 40cm wide very thick safe bags

has anyone ever shipped large fish through using a freight plane??????

please any help or info is great :bow:

cheers :P :bounce:

the fish i sent you on monday went on the plane, thats how they have to do it to gaurantee overnight from whangarei to chch

IMO the challenge with sending fish is mostly keeping the oxygen up. the temp isn't as important with africans but a fish that size will need the bags you are suggesting at least. The courier from here to you is $29.80 per 5kg or 1 foot square (approx) which ever is greater so it will cost alot to ship a box that size. I wanted to get a 20cm fish sent from wellington but couldn't justify the $100+ for courier alone or work out a realistic way we could keep it alive on the trip.

The only safe way to do it is to pay for a huge courier box, or drive up with big bins etc and grab them yourself..

I would say the risk of shipping fish increases exponentially as they get bigger, it also goes on the experience of the person shipping if they know what they are doing then you are more likely to have success..
