tonka toy
Are these a suitabe UVB and UVA light source for a BD??? I have the rest of the lighting sorted but this is doing my head in. If it is suitabe how many watts in a tank 32"x14"x18"?? I am using a daylight basking lamp for day, ceramic lamp for night. Do these need reflectors or not?? Thanks guys, just want to get it right from the start.
Ysolla
Are you using Exo-Terra Repti-glo 5.0's or 2.0's? (forgive the mouthful) The only main thing to consider with UV lights is that the UV only penetrates about a foot down into the tank, so wattage is not really an issue except when it comes to the fittings for the light. So if you make sure your Beardie has access to areas close to the light, you'll be fine. I recommend 5.0's or 10.0's - though I'm sure there are plenty of other good brands out there. You can use a reflector for the UV, but it won't hurt if you don't either, IMHO.
tonka toy
Thanks for that!! I have just been reading some nightmarish reviews on this brand of lighting which has got me totally confused on what to use. :-? Been reading reports that they affect the eyes of the dragon. What are your views on these claims?? How many would I need if I were using the 5.0 or 10.0 Thanks again for your help. :bounce:
Ysolla
Yeah, UV can affect reptile eyes, but it can be any type of UV - it depends on the percentage bulb you are using. 5.0s are probably a safer bet than the 10.0s if you are worried about it. I use 1 bulb per enclosure at work (we also use Repti-glos and have no eye problems), if the reptile has enough access to the light, its not a problem. But it's also important to have places to hide from the light too. But if you are worried about the UV eye thing, you could use Sylvania lamps. Up to you really. I'm sure there are plenty of people on here who use other brands and swear by them too, but I'm certain that the eye thing is a by product of artificial UV full stop, not just Repti-glo lights. Keep them on a decent photo-period of light - something similar to whatever its like outside.
