Matto
hi i was wondering if it is OK to put loaches like kuhili loaches or black loachs in a cichlid tank ? i want the ones that burrow in the sand so it can stir up the "poo" in my gravel so my filter can pick it up better what do you think ? BikBok
i don't know much about cichlids but my guess would be they would eat the kuhli! My kuhlis don't really stir up the gravel that much , i rely on a fortnightly vacuum to get the muck out and I have a few trumpet snails that keep the gravel turned over and aerated as well. What kind of cichlids are they? what pH do you keep them at? Are they known for their aggression or are they a peaceful type? How big is the tank? Are there lots of places for everyone to hide and have their own territory?
Matto
i have electric yellows, snow whites, lumpheads, peacocks and 3 young zebras all in a 80 litre tank it has dividers in it but the fish can swim all through the tank it just lets them have more space. the ph is about 8. Mel
I know alot of people keep clown loaches in with africans successfully - not sure about other types of loaches though.

Hmmm... a pH of 8? Most loaches (as far as I know) like their pH more on the low side. Perhaps someone has more specific knowledge than me about the types of loaches you're thinking of. I would expect others of similar stature like skunks would also be fine but i don't know anout kuhli's. My africans don't take any notice or ever chase the loaches & are often seen sitting near the africans & even rub against them gently. what is a snow white? what size are the africans? are you planning a larger tank? ryanjury
I have kept the clown loaches with my africans before in a high ph and hard water with no problems.. Actually they did get white spot alot but I did do large water changes straight from the hose so think the temp drop probably stressed them so it was probably my fault. I have seen others like yoyo's and stuff in there, I would probably stay away from the koolies though they would be too slow and the africans would probably kill them being curious. Snow whites are probably what they sell as Tropheops snow white, I haven't investigated them much as I have never kept them nor wanted to but maybe they are part of the Tropheops family, or just some zebra.. I would echo Smideys question about the tank upgrade.. You have an awful lot of fish for an 80L tank I hope something bigger is on the way
BikBok
, I would probably stay away from the koolies though they would be too slow and the africans would probably kill them being curious. My kuhlis are very fast when they want to be! Like snakey bullets whizzing around the tank when they get a fright and I've seen one at a LFS shoot right up out of the tank and onto the floor But they like a lower pH - that's true. I keep mine as close as possible to pH 7.0 but usually it's around 7.
Carlos & Siran
We just got a black kuhli and he's like a rocket, certainly wouldn't call him slow
