Doc Holiday
I have aquired a heap of liverock and sand. There is alot of decaying life on some of the rock and in the sand. The rest of the rock is completley dead. Can I just trough it all in a drum with a couple of powerheads to cure it? or is that to easy? is there a need for any filtration? do I need to heat the water? How do you know when this process is finished? any info would be greatly appreciated!!
Pies
I would think you should get a drum or tank or whatever. Fill it with saltwater and a heater and powerhead and try to replicate as much of the 'real' invironment as you can. I would even use a light. Put a rack on the sand if its more than 2 inches deep otherwise the sand will compress and go black and stink. Water change on ocasion, the water will go yellow. Add some life, starfish, snails, hermits and glass shrimps. Helps cycle and provide some life to the rock. Good luck. Pies
Doc Holiday
wouldn't they die pretty quickley with the huge amounts ammonia from the decaying life on the rock and in the sand??
chimera
thats the idea I thought; the dead stuff builds up nitrifying bacteria which is what you eventually want. keep doing water changes.
Pies
thats why I didn't say fill it with yellow tangs They will be fine, they live in skungy rock pools and will help speed up the cycle. Pies
