codpiece
Is there a rough way to figure out how many fish to have in a tank? ie fish per litre? I have a 165 ltr tank with about 26 small fish in apart from my pleco . There are 3 small silver angels and the rest are assorted tetras. whetu
Firstly, hi and welcome to the forum This is a very common question amongst new fishkeepers, but unfortunately the issue is much more complicated than just fish per litre. You would need to take into account things such as: type of fishsize of fish (size now, and size in a few years if they're going to keep growing)dimensions of tank (not just total volume)type of filtertank maintenance 9water changes etc)whether the tank is planted or notgenerally how well the artificial environment you have created is suited to the natural needs of the inmates. It is much more of an art than a science, and by asking lots of questions and learning as you go, you will soon get a feel for what you are capable of maintaining in your particular set-up. Hope that helps.

It sounds like (in theory) your tank should be fine with this kind of stocking level. What kind of pleco do you have? That sounds like the only fish that may grow up to be too big for your tank. The 'assorted tetras' will probably all stay small, and the angels should be fine in there as they grow bigger. Also, what kind of filter do you have? Is the tank planted? Do you do regular water changes?

michael.qian
Eventually you'll get a good hang of it. It is whatever makes the tank look comfortable. Consider things like filtration, size of fish, type of fish, level at which fish swim at (you don't a packed top half and nothing on the bottom), condition the fish perfer etc... Also consider feeding, make sure it's easy enough that all fish get enough during feeding, this is an important parameter that determines what I have in my tank. codpiece
Hi. Thanks for the welcome and advice. I have an Aqua One Ar850 with the built in filtration. I have been doing a water change of about 40 litrs every week, and everything looks healthy. Some of the fish are from my old tank that had an internal useless filter .I believe the pleco is the commonest type, sort of leopard spotted. It is about 8 months old. I have been following the guidelines for filter maintanance etc given with the tank. The reason I joined this forum is because I think my old tank survived through good luck, and this site was reccomended. Lots to learn I think!
