alanco
hey there i was thinking about moving out of gravel and into using sand , is it alright to use white sand in a tank for guppies? and also i came across a thought .. how do you keep a sand bedded tank clean , i mean when the guppies make a mess wouldnt it be hard to clean the waste from the sand ? and even if i brought one of those siphons vaccs wouldnt it suck up the sand too? !!!!! on other thoughts ill just stick to my white gravel!!!!
MarkLB
Hi alanco. It depends on the sand but I think a white sand will probably raise the pH how do you keep a sand bedded tank clean , Have a look at this.... http://www.cichlid-forum.com/videos/cleaning_sand.php HTH
livebearer_breeder
Sand can be a pain. Why not try a small grained gravel and save yourself some hassles? There are some great beaches here in wellington that have grey sand that varies between 1mm-2mm that ive used in tanks without to many problems. livebearer_breeder
I used to run water through in a bucket over and over till it was clean then boil it. Never had any problems, was great for plant roots as well, but to be on the safe side I would have the tank setup for four or five days and check the parameters before putting my fish in.
