lmsmith
Seen some beauties on TM from a respected breeder here in Wellington, and I would love to get some. They're 5cm at the moment. I have a standard bb 3' I could grow them out in - this is enough space for 6 of them, right? I'd then like to keep them in my AR620 (approx 90l) when they're grown - would 2 be ok in that space or would they need more? How long does it take (both size and time to grow) until they are grown enough to pair? I'd like to move a pair into the AR620. Also, other than frequent water changes, good nutrition and space, what can I do to ensure that they grow without deformities? If I breed the babies (all from the same spawn) am I likely to get more deformities because they are related?
fulloc
that all sounds pretty good, not sure what else you could do, maybe try get the babies from different parents off your breeder..? will take mayb a year till they are big and breed, sometimes they breed young tho

Dave+Amy
I've always thought it took 2 years for Discus to fully mature - some look like they're breed young due to being stunted. I wouldn't keep two Discus under 100L - breeders overseas use larger breeding tanks because wastes builds up quicker in smaller tanks, you do realise with babies/small you'll need to do 50% water changes if not more daily right? (the pro's do at least 75% water changes daily to maintain good colour and growth - I only manage 50% and mine average around 6/7cm) Discus release hormones to suppress other Discus from growing hence importance of keeping water quality prime and they're messy eaters. lmsmith
Thanks Dave+Amy - sounds like a bigger tank's in order!! I'm happy to do 50% water changes; I'm used to doing 50% twice a day on my cory tank anyway!
Dave+Amy
just get a huge 400L glass tank made with glass dividers you can stick in when you get a pair...that way you'll get to tanks out of one
