sean the prawn
Hi just wanting to find a few things out before i jump in the deep end.I am wanting to set up a red sea max reef aquarium but am worried about the corrosion the salt water could cause,I was wanting to set it up in a single garage that is fully lined (I live in it) but am worried that the salt water could cause corrosion on some of my musical equipment (guitars and amp) and tv etc Has any one experienced this with their salt water set ups?Any suggestions
Fmxmatt
From what i understand, the only thing that would cause corrosion, is if the equipment was in the firing line of evaporation (i.e above the tank) or if it was getting wet. For example, my tank is surrounded by TV, stereo, metallic ornaments etc and they are fine. However the picture hook which is located above the tank has begun to rust. So I reckon you'd be alright, but might be best to wait to see what others say first
markoshark
There is some slight salt in the air. With an RSM it shouldnt be that bad, with a larger open tank.. Yeah, it can happen.
sean the prawn
Thanks for replys ,Ive been and checked out a rsm set up in one of the pet stores and noticed a small bit of white powdery looking corrosion on the tank frame so I guess that this could be a problem for my music gear, bit of a bummer really I was really looking forward to getting into the hobby

Its probably just salt creep (crystalized salt due to evaporation). It does get everywhere, but since the RSM has a closed lid, it should be good as gold. sean the prawn
Thanks candy, that makes me feel much better As for the white powder it wasnt just salt build up you could actually see the paint had been broken and caused pitting but like you say the rsm is a closed unit so hopefully it should be sweet Cheers :bounce:
