Dave+Amy
Hey - just a query for those in the know for Discus, I have currently 5 small Discus in the 5cm region, they each individually undergo a couple of days being dark in colour before their normal colour is resumed - IS THIS NORMAL? Also, when could I expect my Discus to full colour? Just a beginner but all's going well so far - had them for almost 3months now and haven't had a single fatality Any advice would be awesome! Luke*
do you mean they're losing their colour continually but on a rostered basis? are you water changing with cold water or something? dechlorinating? discus' full colour is only reached at 12-18 months. that's what i always liked about growing them out from young......they get better in time. Dave+Amy
haha no like rostered, but only one is dark in colour at a time and while they're dark in colour they get picked on by the rest even if the rest are smaller than it. It's not water temp (maintained around 29degrees) but only one discus does it at a time - never two. would upload photos if i knew how to.... matthewY
Sounds quite similar to what one of my discus is doing at the moment. It looks like its a dard brown (almost black) while its other family members are fine and fat.... This guy is 1/3 the size. I'm guessing maybe worms? other parasites? and trying to get a supply of med's just incase....
lmsmith
From my limited knowledge of discus, I believe when they're young, their stripes come and go depending on their mood. Have you ever seen adults 'flash' their colours when upset? They can darken considerably. I think until they're full grown, and fully coloured, they can't 'turn off and on' on demand, and appear to flash pretty randomly. Maybe the darker ones get picked on because they appear to be a threat? I'm sure there's some discus f anatics out there who can give you more of an idea. Dave+Amy
It's the 2 larger ones of the batch that go into dark stages - but they've got the most brightest blue coming through the fins in comparison to the others, is this a stage they undergo when they colour up?? It could be an aging thing because the largest of the 5 has stopped turning dark altogether. BUT also - could it be because half my tank is bare bottom (for easy cleaning with these smaller Discus) and so they camOuflage to the colour?? They go their normal colour when on the side with the gravel. Observation made by staring at them for almost half an hour. The larger ones dOn't pick on these smaller ones, and they're all friendly enough since they eat whiteworms from the tip of my finger so I can't be stressing them out with my presence in the room.
