Aquatopia
Right, I went to Placemakers, bought the "White Sand" that is apparently supposed to be Silica Sand. Its so fine its like powder, and when you wash it, apart from being filthy and giving off a scum, you lose half the b****y sand. Have I got the right stuff? Are you just supposed to put it in the tank and let it settle ? Im not sure I like it.
David R
Sounds like it! It actually sinks quite fast when you put it in the tank, but its stirred up easily by big fish.
Aquatopia
How the hell do you clean it though ?
David R
I put some in a bucket half full, swirled it round a bit and quickly tipped the water out. Yeah you do lose a bit, but what you're left with is the heavier stuff that sinks faster.
Aquatopia
Hi DavidR - well i did that on a smaller scale and it stayed dirty - do u have to repeat the washing over and over ?
David R
I think I did it about 3 times for each bucket of sand. Maybe you're trying to do too much at once? What do you mean by dirty?
Aquatopia
Well first water that goes in gives of this brown scum, and then the water stays discoloured no matter how much i seem to swirl it around and Im only doing about 1kg of sand at a time.
