What do you use to heat your dragon enclosures??

Just curious to know what other people use to heat their enclosures? I'm trying to find the best but cheapest :D way to heat my terrarium.

I've found that incandescents (during the day) are good but are much more expensive to run, so I changed to a ceramic bulb the temp is 29 degrees but my dragons are no where near as active as when the incandescent was going. Any ideas why this would be?

does not really matter what you use, heat is heat?the dragons would have got to know where the best spots were to suit their needs and hieracrcy(sp)were ,when you changed the heat source all this would change too.If the overall heat was less and the current day length as well they will slow down naturally.I don`t know how it works but even despite any lighting in the tanks mine always seem to be intune somehow with the real daylength and still slow down to a degree regardless of any artificial lighting??comments?

you need a heat source that emits light and heat during the day. The brighter the light, the more active the dragons will be.

when dragons are adult, no heat required at night if kept inside or garage etc. spend your money making sure the heat and light are good during the day.

mercury vapours are best as they emitt visible light, uvb, and supply heat all in one. problem is they are hard to source reliably in n.z. also they result in one spot in the tank where the dragon gets everything it needs.

if your dragon is adult and inside it should be shut down over winter, which results in no power being needed.

Thanks for your comments, I did vagely wonder if it had something to do with brightness, it is still bright in there tank but no where near what it had been. I'll up that and see what happens. Can you tell me where I can find the mercury vapour type heat, I don't think I've heard of those before.

sorry mate, I can't at the moment. I am still trying to find a reliable supplier. You can source from oversea's sites and import, just do a google search. Best brand to my knowledge is 'TRex'.
