Unexpected Baby BN's - what now?

Hi,

Appreciate this has probably been asked a million times but I have a pair of the Golden and "Common" BN's in my 70 gallon tank that also contains 3 very old Golden Barbs, a male betta, a couple of Black Widows and a few Harlequins and Neons (so loads of room in tank). Saw 2 baby BN's this morning being chased by the Betta, isolated the Betta and don't think the others (maybe the Barbs) will try and scoff them. so what next? Appreciate I probably should have tried to get the eggs and male out into another tank before they hatched but did not realise eggs had been laid.

Do I just leave them in there and see what occurs or should I get the babies out?

Don't expect to see the babies when I get home tonight but imagine if they bred once they will do so again, so any advice greatly received.

cheers,

I think the male protects them and the ones u seen but of just escaped, There is more than likey heaps with the male.

Really? Thats good to know. Thanks for the reply. The eggs must have been laid in a long pipe I have in the tank and I can't see inside it. Guess I'll just leave them to it then.

Forgot to say I have 5 hyper-active Clown Loaches in the tank, about 4 inches long - would they scoff the babies?

I havent breed theses so I am not sure on the size of the babies but i think it would be like fish , if a bn can fit in the mouth of the other fish then I think they will try.

I did try for mine to breed and they wouldn't, A lot of people breed these or they breed in the communtiy tank and don't seem to have problems so Yours should be fine if not then its a learning experience.

4" clowns would probably try to eat them unfortunately

Where did the clowns come from?

Anyway the male will be guarding the eggs I occasionally see free eggs floating around in a cluster. They will take 3-4 days to hatch, the young will have a big yolk sac attached to em. that will last for 3-4 days, when It has disappeared they are ready to take food.

I would scoop up as many as you can put them in a net with an airstone gently bubbling lose by to make sure the water is well oxygenated.

You will lose some to the community fish but as long as there are plenty of places to hide some will survive.

My only concern is you dont know who the mother is, if you have both types of BN they will cross breed and weaken the lines, they will be happy and healthy but consider not passing any on if you are not 100% sure of their parentage.

Good luck

Missed that part, Take one pair out, and Let the Clown loachs eat the young.

You cant let these 2 fish cross breed then seel them/Pass them on to others, as its not good for the hobby.

geez dixon make up yer mind so its ok to breed inferior dwarf GBAs but not ok to cross breed ? sounds hypocritical to me

as for yr babies haziel just leave them to it ,some may not make it, but not many will be eaten ,.Someone here posted once that they used them as feeder fish but most "pleco breeders "know that even as babies they have spines in their cheeks from a young age and use it to pierce a fish throat if swallowed most if not all fish know this and dont eat them they may nibble at them in curiousity but ive never seen one been eaten by another fish apart from another pleco and only when its dead

As for the pairing it can happen that they will cross breed and as dixon advised its not ideal for the hobby if you wish to breed them in the future just make sure that there is only one type in the breeding tank to ensure correct strain
