SparkyNat
My oscars have just started laying on a large flat rock, do i leave them in there or do i take them out sice they are in a tank with smaller oscars ive already rehomed the syno since he was getting a rather rough time by the 2 oscars when he got 2 close. And also how do i tell if they are both females, one is laying, but can i tell from there bits, long egg tubey thing female and the other just has a short white lump? ryanjury
If their breeding tubes are different and they're both participating then its a good chance they're boy and girl.. Girls have broader bits to allow the eggs to come out boys have shorter and pointer bits. You can remove them and raise them much the same as angel babies if you want or leave them too it, I guess it depends how much you want the oscar babies Good luck and prepare for 1000's of oscars if you decide to raise them. markoshark
From what I've read. Oscars make good parents. If you remove the rock, the parents may try and kill each other, each blaming the other for eating the eggs. I'd suggest leaving them there, and then disposing of oscar babies when the parents decide they want to get rid of them, it'll make it easier on them
SparkyNat
Yeah a few days ago they were the most docile fish ive seen now they are psychos and the other fish are sitting in the 2 corners and the oscars have the middle to themselves. The other fish dont even want to get close to them.
ryanjury
A local guy I know who breeds them removes the eggs and has no problems as far as im aware (apart from risking his hands getting eaten). I haven't really talked too much about it because im not too interested in oscars but I know he's got his pair still because he wants to sell them so they obviously haven't killed each other, I guess like everything its down to the individual fish if you wanted to give them a go you should probably isolate everything else. Bilbo
The way I have seen it done is wait until the fry are hatching and then use a long gravel syphon and get them that way. Be careful because at first they will attack the gravel hose but it wont take them long to work out the fingers on the end of it are the real targets and will jump out of the water to get to them. Oscar bites hurt! they will draw blood if give the chance.
SparkyNat
Trust me i know that their bites hurt, they manage to draw blood most times. Im amazed at how well they are looking after the eggs i thought they would have been eaten by now
