Hi All.

Not being of the "Cold Water" persuasion I would like some help please.

Does anybody know of a "COLDWATER FISH" that looks Like "NEMO" and is called a "PARROT FISH", I think.

All assistance gratefully appreciated.

Parrotfish are a tropical fish that eat coral. They are called Parrotfish because their teeth are fused to form a beak rather than individual teeth. By eating and grinding up coral they create sand. Parrotfish have been recorded in NZ waters only a couple of times as juveniles brought down here by currents. They won't survive as it gets too cold during winter. You hear NZ fishing programmes on TV refer to Parrotfish but these are in fact Wrasse. There are many types of Parrotish in the tropics and many types of Wrasse around NZ but Parrotfish definitely need the warmer water.

if you're talking about marine fish then OAB is dead on. The wrasses in NZ used to be commonly called parrotfish, and still are by fishermen. The most likely species if similar in any way to Nemo would probably be the banded wrasse which is very common round NZ. If its being called a parrotfish by a fisherman though there's no guarantee it is actually a wrasse. Fishermen in general tend to be rather loose with common names. A good candidate if not a wrasse would be the red moki.
