becc4
Hi all. I finally have some dwarf cockatoo fry. They are approximately 1 week old, female is swimming them around the tank grazing. THey are in a bare bottm tank by themselves so no other predators. How long should i lave the mum in there for? I'm worried that she'll do what my rams did and get bored or anxious and eat em. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
ryanjury
Personally I would remove the mother or babies because shes done her job now.. It has been speculated that leaving the babies with the mother makes them grow alot faster but I haven't tried it, there is always the risk that she may eat them so ive always played it safe. becc4
Thanks, the mother seems to be looking after them really well... but as you say she's done her job, and there are no other predators so the fry should be okay with out her. I might do some rearragning tonight. THanks again for your thoughts

becc4
Bought these ones off trade me from discus dude phil. I'm not sure what strain, the big honcho male has the orange colouring on all his finage. He looked spectular fins all blazing and body went almost black - when he was staking out his territory. Got 3 males out of 5. One male has died, the one that fertilised the eggs that have hatched - the female really took chunks out of him. Anyhoo, I will see how I get on with this first batch of fry. Will def have some to trade (fingers crossed I get these ones through the next couple of months).
MarkLB
Good work. I had a pair of Cockatoos a year or so ago and they spawned heaps but Mum ALWAYS  scoffed the babies when they hatched. I never got fry one from them. becc4
Ok have removed the mother, she is back in the main planted tank with the 2 boys and other female. She's not too happy, still bright yellow racing around the tank, I suppose looking for her babies. Ooooh just watching them now, they are doing a bit of dancing together I have a brine shrimp hatchery in with the fry, will see how they go. I;m so excited I have never had fry get this far.
