:o Could anyone please suggest a really good book(s) about fish...what i am actually after is ALL about the egg fanning behaviour in fish...it is for one of my assignments....have googled but nothing substantial there...also spent some time in the library...no luck there either....i need at least a 1000 words and all i got off the internet was a few lines ... i am sure there is bound to be more info out there....but where??? :0 *sigh* any help/suggestions appreciated..... thanks ...the particular info i am looking for is

1. Identify the behaviour and describe when and how it is performed.

2. Explain what the evolutionary significance of the behaviour is in terms of survival of the species concerned.

3. Explain how living in human society and interactions with humans may or may not have an effect on the performance of the behaviour and why such changes may or may not occur.

I would appreciate if anyone could please suggest where i would find more on the above...

Hello

There is not much information on it anywhere

likes bristlenose males use it for display to atract females to caves. then to fan the eggs to keep oxygen flow and even temperature over them

knife fish, with the areas they breed in use fanning to keep the silt off the eggs, of course increasing the survival

you will pick up lost of information out of books, but it will be little bits from each books

think most of your words will end up being about how people might have influenced any behavour changes if any

i am out west auckland and have a large library of books and magzines that you are welcome to come look threw and read here if you want

if that is of any help, not sure about loaning books out thow, as have lost a few doing that :bounce:

Hiya, I found this

http://beheco.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/co ... l/16/2/389

which is a good start for your own research. After all, you should be able to describe the behaviour (Q1) from your own observations, surely? :)

I also typed in a search in the Behavioural Ecology website itself, using egg-fanning, and got about 25 articles which would cover all aspects of your essay. You just have to read them and decipher...

http://beheco.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/

If you look at nest-tending and brood care as other possible search categories, I'm sure you will find what you need.

Good luck.

Firstly- Welcome to FNZAS!!! Secondly- what level is this for??? I could recommend a heap of sources but if it is for a NCEA level 3 essay or something they might be a little more info than you need...

Simply though- (If you haven't got this far already)

1. Fanning is a form of Parental care in Fish. They fan their eggs to keep fresh water flowing past them, Thus removing detritus and keeping fungus and bacteria from settling on, and destroying the egg.

2. The fish which fans its eggs is more likely to have a greater hatch-rate. It pretty much goes from there

3. ??? I don't get that question. I suppose it is talking about Natural selection. Essentially, with Natural selection, the most "fit" organisms are likely to have more offspring. By fit i am not referring to athleticism, but rather reproductive success. In modern human society, what is happening is that this is being distorted. For example, a Woman of higher intellect is likely to have fewer babies than a women of lower intellect, simply because their professional life gets in the way of their childbearing "potential". There are many more examples of this.
