i trying to find a catfish for my tank to eat the algae my 1st thought was bristlenose but have read and told they need driftwood which i dont have in my tank or wish to put in because i am really happy with my rock landscape. was also told they will eat your plants and thats another thing i dont want to happen. Are there any catfish what would suit the job they would have a firemouth as a companion. I am also getting 3 large sae are they effective algae eaters when big?

thanks for all the help

How big is your tank?

If you have space I can highly recomend one of these.

They are peacefull, but tough. Do a great job on the algae, I haven't had to clean the inside of my tank for 12 months. They dont eat plants, but they can disturb them just because of their size as they are looking for algae. Be warned they WILL grow big though. About twice the size of a BN catfish. They also eat a lot (Veges and catfish tablets) and poo a LOT as a result.

All I need now is a bigger tank

Cheers

The BN's don't eat my plants either. You don't need any wood either. Just feed them pleco tabs, It's got the wood componet in it.

As far as I know the JBL PlecoChips are the only ones to contain wood, you'd have to read the packaging to be sure.

BN really need a little bit of wood. Only needs to be a small peice so it shouldn't be any trouble. If you get BN get a bunch of young ones, they're crazy little workers and when they're of age they'll breed without assistance. I haven't found a fish that eats algae like a BN does.

SAEs are awesome at keeping thread algae away. Older/Bigger they get the lazier the get, same with the BN, if they're not growing then they dont need as much food. At the moment stores are getting in 'Flying Fox' but they're actually SAEs (which is good!).
