Loopy
Finally managed to convince our silver dollars to spawn again. A bit of viagra in the form of a huge handful of duckweed did the trick! Sent them all mental for 3 days! Our gold severums thought it was Christmas with eggs flying everywhere. So managed to siphon out a lot more eggs than last time and put them in their own tank with meth blue and waited. Now we have wrigglers this morning! and a lot more eggs still looking clear. My goal is to get at least one fry to swimming stage this time round!

Loopy
ok tried to get a couple of photos but they didn't turn out. i had camera on wrong setting. I will try again later. The wee guys really don't like the light much and go spastic. They wriggle and swim all over the tank in short bursts when i uncover them. I have had a towel over the whole tank except the end of the tank facing the darkest part of the room since i put the eggs in. A pre-cautionary measure because silver dollars are a member of the tetra family and most tetra eggs are light sensitive. And there are at least a dozen hatched now!! :bounce: :bounce:
Loopy
Ok i finally just tried again to get a piccy of the silver dollar fry again. This is the best i could do. We must have about 10 or so still alive and well! They are happily absorbing their yolksacs and going totally nuts whenever they get uncovered. It is SO hard trying not to disturb them too much! Alan
Have you got a heap of java moss in with them, and also snails, both of which will give them a source of their first food. BBS and micro worm will be too big for them to start with.

Loopy
I think i would like to have those things in there with them but worry about contaminating the tank. It is a paranoia thing. We are losing a lot to fungus( a lot more than you normally would with other species) about a 50% hatch success. But I am fairly confident that they will not go hungry if they make it that far. We always have various foods available for the other multitudes of mouths we have round here! It is more a case of " we will cross that bridge when and if we get to it"
Alan
"those things" help keep the contamination thing down!!
wilson
so give us a update how many have hatched
Loopy
Ok got about 14 babies :bounce: Funny thing is they actually look really pink! not grey like i was expecting. Still absorbing yolksacs but at a wild guess i would think we could have free swimmers in about 36 - 48 hours? I wish i had time to take another photo too but i have to leave for work in ten minutes might try when i get home.
Loopy
wow! Just got home from work and in the space of about 9 hours the wee guys have suddenly sprouted eyes! they now have two tiny little black specks to gawk at me with! . . . . Oh alright i will go and take a photo for ya!
Loopy
hmm... best i could do again. Can't wait to see what they look like after another 6 hours or so! Still amazed about how quickly it seemed for their eyes to appear!
GZ_Loach
maybe they will grow legs in another 90hours and walk away
wilson
Posted: Tue Apr 24, 2007 1:43 am  isnt it you need to rase 10 for 30 days for it to 'officially' count i think you can do it good luck!
Loopy
little guys are still going very well. don't think we have lost any for a day or two now so still have about 14. They still have a bit of yolk sac left but seem to be very close to free swimming. They zoom around the tank in short bursts lots and don't seem to mind a bit of light every now and then. Eyes have developed from just black dots to proper eyes with the tiny silvery ring and black pupil. They also have the tiniest little fins which they flutter occasionally (reminds me of a baby bird testing its wings when learning to fly) I put in a drop of very freshly hatched brine shrimp just before and one of the most mature dollar babies seemed to have a snap at a shrimp but got a bit carried away and ended up zooming off to the other end of the tank. Seems like using the throttle on your fins is a learnt thing that comes with age  But i don't think there will be a problem with food for them as they are quite big fry for a tetra i think, perhaps just a bit smaller than a angelfish wriggler. Still VERY excited about this whole process :bounce:
Loopy
Hey wilson! Our absolute ultimate goal is to verify a breeding of silver dollars but we are taking each day as it comes. A lot can happen in 30 days with young fish. I can barely contain myself with the prospect of getting them to free-swimming! let alone to 30 days! :bounce: The great thing is you don't have to have 10 fry from one spawn for a breed to be registered. It can be from multiple spawns from the same parents. So if you have a pair of convicts and they spawn 10 times and you only manage to raise one fry from each spawn to 30 days it can still count for registering as long as you have the correct paperwork and dates ( I think. Someone please correct me if i am mistaken ) Which is why i am already trying to tempt the pack of fat dollar gluttons to do the fishy hanky panky again so i can get some more eggs as "back-up". Alan
Just about right there Loopy, but not quite. The ten have to survive to the youngest's 30th day. Soyou do still have to have ten to present to your Breeding Coordinator.
Loopy
Thanks Alan. Yeah i am aware of the last fry having to be 30 days to qualify. And yes we do still have at least 10 fry as of this moment to show our breeding co-ordinator. But our breeding co-ordinator has already seen them plenty as they are me! I won't go into details about that but lets just say if you want something done right, do it yourself. The day the fry are officially free-swimming is the day i will e-mail Kevin to discuss verifying and such.
Gannet
has this ever been done in nz/world before?
Loopy
I wish i knew. I could not find anything when i googled for info a while ago and haven't heard of anyone doing this before but that doesn't mean that it hasn't been done though. Would love to hear if anyone else has breed and raised Silver dollars before though!
Loopy
Got another picture for you all (whoever "you all" may be?!) Fry are still just scooting round the bottom of the tank but jeepers they can go fast! Makes it awfully difficult to get a photo of something so tiny and which is there one jiffy and not the next!
