Looking for alittle help, have a sick female Firemouth looks like a fungus growing above her eye. It's a white fluffy type. have treated the tank with Wunder Tonic twice now over the last 4 days, but does not look any different.

How long does this tonic take to work? as there is no info on the bottle apart from the dose to give. Any other Ideas, as I dont want to lose the old girl.

Cheers

Craig

not a great pic I had just added the tonic into the tank. The fungus is just above the eye.

you can apply meth blue straight to the fungus if you wish with a fresh cotton tip (one of those ear cleaner things) if you like. i think you might have to be careful not to get it on the eye though (not sure what it would do to it)

Thanks, whats 'meth blue' don't think I've seen it. After 2 years with fish this is my first problem.

Shes not easy to catch, but once in the net just lays there, so should be able to miss the eye.

Nice offer anyway, Ta.

I have taken her out of the tank and droped a couple of drops of the 'wonder tonic to the wound, will see how this does as I have been to all the pet stores in ChCh and can't find what is required to help the old girl get better.

how old is she? really old fish can struggle with fighting off nasties just like old humans can

Not that old, just over 2 years.

Have now coats the sore with meths blue, looks like its still on, as still blue looking under the fluffy stuff. how often would i use this on the wound? I did get some in her eye but it just ran off.

Wunder Tonic has meth blue in it anyway, plus some other bits (FYI)

Its my personal beleif, that the stress caused by manually applying medication exceeds its benefit, its a personal beleif, and others may disagree, but personally I'd do one of these:

1) Put her in a smaller tank with clean water and Furan2

2) Large waterchanges on current tank, keep the water perfect and well aerated, and reduce lighting temporarily

Furan2 seems to be the god of medications, its the only medication I've used that hasn't let me down time after time. Only downside is its like $18 a sheet, so it takes a god-like wallet to be able to afford to treat your main tank, hence the use of a hospital tank.

I have 2-3 year old Firemouths too, and neither have had any health problems, so age shouldn't be an issue. How do you know its a girl? I've been trying to sex mine, has been driving me nuts, I can't work it out :(

Edit: Oh and I do want to say, if the Wunder Tonic is helping, dont stop doing what you're doing because of my thoughts, if its working thats awesome

Thanks for all the advise, you are right Furan2 is good stuff, and very dare, to do my tank would be about 6-8 sheets over the days to treat.

Don't know if the direct application is working or not, the wound looks no smaller, but also no bigger, she is swimming around more though. I might need to buy a smaller tank to use for treatment.

Not sure how you check the sex, I do know that the female is smaller, and is not as colorful.
