hi all. this a query about a shrimp hatchery or "shrimpery" that the LFS has sold me. i have done a wee bit of research and i have seen the DIY hatcheries on this forum and i am just a wee bit weary of this one. it is a San Fransisco Bay Brand Shrimpery, it is essentially a black box, that you put salt water and eggs into, with a urine sample looking jar with a wee hole in the lid that you tip upside down into the lid of the black box. the jar is full of normal tap water. there is no aeration at all and the LFS said to float it in the tank for a bit of extra warmth but it's too heavy to float. apparently the shrimp, after hatching, will swim up towards the light and stay in the top jar. has anyone used one of these? have i been duped into buying something that's not going to work?

i think i agree spider...i got up this morning and it looks like nothings happened. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr :x

i am getting worried. i will get hubby to make a hatchery but is there something else i can give my angel fry in the meantime? there are a few free swimming and i'll be gutted if i lose them.

Hi there, I have had one of those San Francisco Shrimperies and it didn't work that well. Very low hatch rate and very slow to hatch. If you need BBS in a hurry you could do what I did - just fill a 1.5l coke bottle with warm water, salt and BS eggs, put an air hose with a bubbler in the bottle then float it in the fry tank (secure it somehow). By the next day or less they will hatch and just drain the bottle through a piece of fine cloth and then rinse the cloth in the tank. This is a messy way to do it though because all the egg shells get spread through the tank! But it is a very quick and easy solution?

I have one of those corrals now and they are expensive but very easy to use!

Mel :)

You can also buy fine fry food, and liquid fry food (not the best but they get to eat), or alternatively frozen brine shrimp if your local fish store stocks it (most do).

Freshly hatched brine shrimp are definately the best though :) Serve them when orange (just before they go white) if you can.
