Lady-Lene
Hi All Yes I'm a newbie to fish keeping and to the site. I've been scanning the forums, however and this is a great place. Some very knowledgable people I have a Sunsun Aquarium with the filter in the lid. Not as large as most of yours but all I've got room for. Baby steps! I'm having trouble setting up the filter system in the lid. It seems to blow out a lot of air with the water and makes quite loud gurgling noises. Don't think its supposed to do that?? I'd appreciated any help. PLEASE SEE PHOTO FURTHER DOWN!
Lady-Lene
I have just bought this tank and used all the water and stones from the old tank and also placed the old filter in for a time. I'd say about half of the water is original. Readings all seem OK as yet - is it likely the tank will have to cycle again? (I remember how difficult that was when setting up two years ago and how many fish I lost)
Alan
I hear-tell that NZ is a fairly stretched out set of two islands. Where abouts on those islands are you situated. Some one nearby may be able to help you. I think if you go to your PROFILE and change it to that place, that that is the way to go. No I haven't got a filter like that, but thanks. But with the new tank, I'd wash the filter with some of the tank water, do a water change with aged water, and go from there. But if the flter has been down for too long, you'll have to start all over. Alan
Lady-Lene
Thanks for your speedy reply Alan! Have updated my profile. Im in Te Awamutu (North Island). Aahh .... now comes the embarrassing bit ..... I think I've solved the filter problem. I'm pretty sure I had the carbon and ceramic holders upside down. That meant that the water could not filter down until it reached the top of the overflow which was too high. I went straight from one tank to the other and the old filter and water went straight into the new tank. Just one fish yesterday not looking very happy - a fantail - bottom sitting and occasional gulping at the top but then she's always been temperamental. Appears happier today. Heres hoping coz I've become quite attached to them over the past couple of years. God did I say that out loud? Thanks
SpidersWeb
I have just bought this tank and used all the water and stones from the old tank and also placed the old filter in for a time. (I remember how difficult that was when setting up two years ago and how many fish I lost) Sounds like your tank will be 'seeded' well. What this means is its not officially 'cycled' but the bacteria is there, so your cycling process will be very mild as you've got a much larger starting population, and I doubt you'd lose any fish. If you see fish not looking their happy normal selves, then do a partial water change. If you could take a photo of the filter that'd be great. I just setup a Jebo R338 tank, these all-in-one tanks are quite nifty, I'm liking it 8) Normally lots of air means the filter is having trouble sucking water up. Try filling the filter media with water, and checking the intake is under water, and running it for say 30 seconds, it should come right if its assembled correctly, and if its not assembled correctly I'm useless because I dont have a Sunsun tank lol Congrats on the upgrade, and welcome to the fishroom
Lady-Lene
Thanks for your help Spiders Web. I have taken photo of the filter media but don't know how to upload it. Just can't decide which way up the containers go. Do they go with the stem to the top or the stem down through the hole? Very frustrating. It only appears to blow air when the stems are facing upwards. This however looks to me like they are upside down - oh for some decent 'INSTRUCTIONS' (a female thing) The intake is definitely under water and there is no air going through the hose with holes in it (above the filter media). Yes I like the idea of having everything in the hood - time will tell if it was a good idea or not. Thanks for your advice. Fishies all happy as Larry right now but its early days yet. Lady-Lene
Ok - I just rock!!!!! Managed to upload a photo to a free photo website! Here it is ... http://www1.snapfish.com/slideshow/Albu ... _=75412825 I've shown one with stem up and one with stem down. smidey
Hi lady-lene I have my filter setup with ceramic bio-rings in the box & filter wool on the top, no carbon etc. I also had the gurgling problem, from advise here from people with aqua one tanks that did the same, I put a straw down into the feeder. the straw sticks up to just below the spray bar. That seems to fix it most of the time. What size is your tank? I have a 1000mm one, the hood filter is good, will give you clear water but I have recently added a canister filter as well & it looks like there isn't any water in the tank its so clear. PM again if you want more advice. Smidey
Lady-Lene
Thanks heaps for that Smidey - I'm off in a minute to try the straw thing :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: Did you look at the photo? Which way up do the holders go? I bet that 1000mm tank is impressive. I'd love one that size but I've got nowhere to put it unless I oust Hubby's TV or a sofa lol Mine is just 600mm (95lt). I don't have a canister filter but I do have my old stingray filter in there for a little extra oomph coz the filter that came with it only does 450 lt/h. I read somewhere that for excellent filtering you should have ten times the tank capacity. That means I should have a 950 lt/h at least. You reckon I could get away with leaving the stingray in or should I switch to a canister filter? Stingray is kinda bulky hey.
Gannet
the problem i found with the straws is that after time for some reason or another they stoped working and my tank over flowed (thank goodness for a safety overflow) so now i just have gauze over top of it and it stops the noise
smidey
The only thing ive found you have to be careful with when using two filters is the flow of water inside the tank, I have the spraybar from the canister spraying into the back wall as both the filters pumping into the tank made a current that was pushing my plants over. The more filtration the better, my tank is around 200L & I have 2000L/hr & the water is crystal clear. As for the overflowing issue, I'm not sure how its possible with a straw, I believe all the straw does is change the way the water flows into the feeder. I have had straws in mine for over 6 months with no probs, the straw is too small to stop any major flow.
smidey
Did you look at the photo? Which way up do the holders go? To be honest i'm not sure. i have had it "box Spout" up like the photo on the left for 8 months or so & it worked fine. I have just tried turning one of the boxes over & it seems to work too, this way keeps the bio rings submerged which I guess is what they need for the bacteria to survive but the water level is very high. I will create another thread to see what other "hood filters" setup are.
