Krama
I was wondering if many people actually used qt before entering a new species into the tank, and if they did, was it mainly for fish, or was it everything wet. Reason for my question is maybe I should do it, and it is more important than I have thought it to be. MJ
chimera
mark - i never have and dont think most do (although a few definately wish they did after the losses they've had), probably should but often too difficult to setup a separate QT. half of the problem can be addressed by knowing how a sick fish looks/acts at the LFS, making sure it eats etc before you even decide to buy. i "sort of" QT'd my regal angel for about 2 weeks - although he (she) was in the same system, just in the refugium. probably did it good coz when it went into the display the blue tang harassed it. if it had any diseases then i'd be screwed, always a potential risk but as i say, monitor the fish at the LFS first. ask how long they've had it, maybe even ask to put it on hold and see if its still alive a week later
Bubbles
monitor the fish at the LFS first. ask how long they've had it, maybe even ask to put it on hold and see if its still alive a week later I very much agree with the above. Another thing to consider is that due to our import laws fish have already spend a fair amount of time in holding before getting to the LFS. So it's not like overseas where they're 'fresh' from the ocean. I usually ask the LFS to hold fish for me. It's the strangest thing, but spotting a fish I want is generally inversely proportional to how much I can afford it at that very moment Bubs
trinity
I use a QT mainly to get the fish fat and used to my feeding timetable and what I feed my fish some fish can be picky eaters at first  and /or very shy  aswell so its a good way to familarise yourself with that fishs habits and for them to get used to you. Everyone to their own...............After I had major losses when I first started I have pretty much stuck to a routine with new fishs and havn't had a loss or fish disease since I also use the tank for any aggressive fish that need to be socialised again
wasp
Yes I have a QT, it is set up permanently just a small tank. Didn't used to but after introducing marine velvet to my main tank I decided it would be cheaper to have a QT. Like Trinity I find it quite useful sometimes new fish are not eating properly & putting them on their own means the food can just float around till they figure it out, without competition from other fish. I don't use copper the fish just stay there for a few weeks till I think they're ready for the main tank.
Krama
good thoughts, thank you for your time in the responses... i will looks at the logistics of setting up a qt, it should be fairly easy to do, more of an on demand, especially in the initial stages of setting up a main tank.
