suphew
I might setup one up just to try it out for interest. But I have been thinking about my problem (mainly cyno, but a small amount of GHA) and am thinking the problem is more likely phosphate than Nitrate, (BTW neither is measurable in my tank). I would be interested in any ideas from you layton for lowering phosphates, I have read a little about using kalk to lower phosphate but don't really understand how this is done or works?? I currently have pretty much no sand, feed pretty lightly, T1000 skimmer which I'm happy with, and run phosphate resin in a fluidiser, tons of water movement (2x6100, UP7 return, 2x 1060 closed loops). wasp
One thing that sometimes but not always works would be vodka dosing, one ml per hundred litres daily.
suphew
One thing that sometimes but not always works would be vodka dosing, one ml per hundred litres daily. Tried that for a couple of months and it didn't help. I started using bio digest instead cause it works out costing about the same. But maybe I should have another go now I have removed my sand which seems to helping, and maybe crank the dose right up. Last time I got to just a bit higher than the reccomended (~1.2ml/100l). Does any one know what the safe level to go is before giving up?
rossco
Without any scientific rationale for such thoughts.... ...I would think there is no such thing as a 'safe level'. Concepts like 'homeostasis' will kick in to try to 'adjust' to whatever we do to our tanks before 'chaos' has a turn. Use your eyeometer - watch what's happening in your tank... I have had a bit of algae and have increased my dosing of vodka (twice a day) to TOTAL about 1.5 mls per 100l. Other than the fish regularly having break dancing competitions, no harmful effects but a decline in algae.
