suphew
You wanna be careful with that stuff dude, Yeah am planning to keep a close eye on it, Pies is wanting to use it as well, but is using my tank as a test lol. I'm hoping the worst that can happen is an algae outbreak, it can't be too unsafe or they wouyldn't be able to feed it to the cows. BTW its used to treat 'grass staggers' I reackon they should just stop drinking so much.
wasp
Sounds like the same stuff I got. At the time I contacted the company and asked about the impurities, they did furnish me some figures although not totally comprehensive. I then forwarded this to Randy on the chemistry forum RC, and asked him, he said he did not see any major issues as per the information given, but noted that their controls over impurities may vary. I'm still dosing this as required in fact I added some 1/2 hour ago after doing a water change. I'm happy with the tank don't think there's a problem. suphew
Feel like I have added a ton of the stuff now, but my Mg is up from 1020 to 1200ppm, another dose tonight should get me pretty close. I have been dosing MgCl instead of my usual kalk topup over night, I wasn't sure how much water I would need to mix it with and I could proberly have used a lot less. Once I get the Mg where I want it, I'm going to have to wait a couple of days for my params to stablise since theres been no kalk going in. No signs of diatoms or algae yet (well no more than I had already!)
rossco
One of the biggest dangers of using the less 'pure' stuff is not so much relatively harmless diatom/algae outbreaks but toxicity through excess trace elements such as mercury and arsenic. Even the better grade stuff has these elements but hopefully at a harmless level.
suphew
Tested water today, KH 9 Ca 360 Mg 1400 Mg did a bit of a jump with the last dose, first dose 1020-1100, second 1100-1200, third which was actually only 2/3 the amount of first two 1200-1400. Not sure why this happened but I rushed the first couple of tests so I might have been out by a bit. BTW I've been dosing it all week using my topup so those large changes didn't happen in one fast hit. The good news for me is that while Ca is still low, its closer to being in balance with Kh. I've nad the reactor turned down because of the high Kh (was 12) and have been topping up with Mg instead of kalk, so I was expecting the numbers to be a bit low.
