Hi, all i am thinking of upgrading from my 90l mini reef to a 170l --------

(920 x 370 x 50mmdeep)--with built in ovweflow. Mainly because i want more room for my blue tang and want some more space to play with. I was wanting to know how many watts of lighting would you recomend i have heard of 1 watt per litre but.. would a 150w MH be enough? Mayb supplement it with actinic floros? Also as i dont want to pay for a ro/di unit is the water from the supermarket ok for topoff?---(will use NSW for water changes). Also with my sump how many LPH should i use for return? And one other thing i am thinking of making my stand out of metal (well my friend has offerd to :D will this be strong enough?

Thanks for reading. sorry that it is so big but had to fit in all my questions :D

Cheers

Dan

Hey Dan, My tank is pretty much that size. I couldn't afford a sump either. Instead of a sump I have two fluval canister filters (a 103 and a 203). I'm not sure about watts per litre, but I have a 150W MH with 3 15W atinics. interms of a skimmer I am also using a budget skimmer, Weipro SA-2014 and it seems to be working nicely. I'm still kinda a beginner but as far as I can tell if you can afford to upgrade your skimmer you might as well and as far as I can tell deltec's seem to be one of the best out there. Not sure about the whole water situation, I'm sure someone else can answer that question for you.

I have a 4 foot tank under the house (saving up for a proper upgrade, sump, proper skimmer...everything) and it has a metal stand, so I don't see why your tank wouldn't be alright with one. You'll just have to make sure that your friend builds it properly and has plenty of support (bracing, good welds etc) and it would be a good idea to also coat it in some sort of waterproof paint.
