  2. Thanks Mystic, it is good to be back. It has been one hell of a year, but I'm alive and grateful!

It is definately not an adolfi cory Luke, it doesnt have the bright orange colour behind the black, but the lighting isnt great in the photo so i can see what you meant.

I got two adult zebras for £150, a pair at that. in the shops they are rarely available and cost £150 for a baby thats about 1-2inches, so I got a good deal on ebay.

Unfortunately disaster struck this morning. Due to a filter problem overnight I woke up to find a lot of dead fish in my tank, including one zebra. the other zeb was on its side, i netted it and got the filter working and held the net in front of the filter outlet so that it could get oxygen. Thankfully after four hours in the net it seemed a lot better and i was able to let it swim free. Hopefully she will be ok. I also went and got an airpump and some air stones to prevent it happening again. Am really gutted. All the fish that died were favourites. I lost my three denesoni barbs, one L046, a rock shrimp. also lost a congo and a silvertip tetra, but they are easily replaceable compared to the others.

still, at least i have one zebra and i am pretty sure its the female and males are easier to come by, so hopefully one day i will be able to breed them.

  4. my concern is that you have one only of a lot of schooling fish. the silver dollar, cherry barb and head and tail light tetra all like friends of the same kind around to make them feel happy.

I would go with jude (hi jude) on the feeding, pop some wafers in after lights out (in the room as well as the tank) and the bottom feeders will be happy.

But think about getting some friends!

  5. I would agree, the cherries are real pretty too! You dont need to worry too much about the male to female ratio with them either, so you can have more of the brighter coloured males, thats in my experience anyway.

They are also pretty hardy, certainly more so that the neon rainbows.

    Good luck and enjoy,

  6. HI Mitch

Cherry barbs are schooling fish, so like a group of atleast six to be happy. And if you are getting a mix of male and female guppies and platies, make sure that there are at least two females to every male.

Angels are far from angelic! they may go a bit at the guppies tails. and certainly dont put a siamese fighter in with them, as Caryl said they will attack it and it wont have nice fins for long!

    enjoy your fish

  7. hi Buttons

They will also love carrot, just chop a chunk and throw it in the tank. It is also a good idea to give them the calcium blocks for turtles, they need a lot of calcium to keep their shell healthy, and you will see them sucking on those too.

They are amazing, have yours laid any eggs yet?

    Enjoy them,

  8. hey Jake

the fish shops were pretty impressive. one in particular had heaps of L numbers, and they were generally really good sizes, over 10cm each.

And i saw two true zebra plecos!! they were tiny, only about 1.5cm but so stunning even at that size. really really wanted them! but they were expensive, and obviously i have no tank to put them in. typical! next time maybe...i'm dreaming!

and all your photos are good! even the ones you think are bad!

  9. hey Catbrat,

nice plecos! and nice pictures too!

they are very cool, makes me miss mine. I'm going on a fish shop jaunt on monday, one country road with about 10 fish shops! one of the good things about living in England! and the fancy plecos are so much cheaper here. unfortunately i am homeless and broke, so not about to set up a tank (or ten for all the fancy plecos i am going to want!), but one day i will get back into it!

    good luck with breeding them!

  10. hey casey

I am the manager of the fish department in Animates in Palmy. feel free to come in and ask me any questions you have anytime. just ask for Becs, or if you forget that ask for the fish person!

we have loads of kuhli loaches in at the mo, they are a devil to catch though! would say dont ask for me if you come to buy them...but i always seem to end up catching them for people so cut to the chase and as for me!

would be good to see you

  11. clown loaches are prone to whitespot, at work they get bad whitespot more than any other fish, no matter what tank they are in.

At work (i work in an LFS for those that dont know) we have had trouble with skunk loaches fin nipping, however, they are in a large school and do seem to gang together a bit, so maybe one on its own would be ok. keep a close eye tho.

Interestingly i have never had snails in my main community tank, even though i know i have bought plants in from tanks with plenty of snails. I have kuhli loaches, no other fish known for eating snails. so maybe they do eat snails???
