  1. I bought 10 of those cheap glass co2 diffusers back from thailand and they are absolute cheese, literally every one has broken on the bend with next to no force being applied except to seat a soft silicone air hose. Poor design, the inline ones work better anyhow.

  2. I had a co2 overdose last week too mate, scary stuff to see all the fish floating or belly up. Massive waterchange, salt dose and lots of surface movement and all the important($) fish came right, lost a few assorted tetras and of course the glass cats as they are first to succumb to gill damage i find. 3 days later everyone is fine :)

  3. I did a a basic trademe search for gfo..

First result, bulk gfo, $10/kg private seller. The very next result from Bulk gfo(dont pay higher prices for stickers and packaging they say), $74.95/0.5kg, thats a 1500% difference.

Either there has been a typo somewhere or this is a prime example of what sort of markups LFSs tack on, and a pretty rude one at that. This surely isnt good for our hobby, except to help weed out the stores which charge the highest markups, especially on locally available items.

  4. Perhaps the shops need to start buying certain products online to show their wholesalers that supplying them with items which price them out of the market isnt going to help further business for either of them... Seems crazy we can buy everything for around 1/2 the rrp shipped, including many high end products.

  5. not many freight companies will insure a fish tank. I guess if the tank builder can internally brace it with some 2x4 and polystyrene, and then surround it in poly and box it up, it shouldnt be a worry if its on a pallet. I can recommend Dave Evans if you are going to get one made in christchurch his tanks are perfect and prices just as good :)

  6. I have a 2700uv, a 2700 and an fx5 and the fx5 is a far better filter in every aspect, actual flow rate is higher than the 2700s, filtration is superior ,auto primes, auto purges daily, bottom drain, less power consumption, i even like the look - but it is in the next price range after all. (can find for 250-350 2nd hand, occasionally)

Also I would definitely prefer the 2700 over the 2700uvc because the paltry 5w uv unit is not a benefit when you realise you have sacrificed the priming system to house it, not to mention an extra 50 bucks, which would nearly buy you an inline 9w uv sterilizer.

  7. The guy who owned the rangiora lfs before it went out of business said he had pirahna at home, i kept listening.... then he said he had some for sale, i puzzlingly questioned further and then was shown them - long story short they were meytynnis sp., small too. I think they get false id in a lot of cases with small pacu, especially places like animates who have trouble IDIng the most simple fish and just read what is on their list.
