  1. Ok thank you so much guys Another quick question.... the Bettas live with 2 Aldofi Cory and 3 Khuli loach, the Khuli loach have the ends of two coke bottles that go under my two ornaments so they have some caves to hide in during the day, i've noticed my male Betta spends time in there (which freaks me out, as i'm worried he'll get stuck!) and has been guarding it from the corys (Khulis still seem to go in and out ) could he have built a bubble nest in there?
  2. The flow from the spray bar is pretty full on, the surface is in constant motion. Don't get me wrong it's not like Niagra falls but it's def not calm enough to build his nest. He had attempted a nest about a week ago under the leaves of a plant but I had to trim it back as it has gone a bit balasitc So...... I should turn the filter off? Or maybe let the plants grow up again so he can build one under the leaves again?
  3. After the February earthquake I lost my Betta tank, so the girls went to the community tank and my boy was under strict "earthquake accommodation". A few months ago I got a cheap Jebo tank and after cycling etc they were all reunited. I am not a breeder and just have these guys because I love their personalities, they have helped me prove to many people that fish aren't boring! So he has realised he is the man of the tank again and began displaying to the girls and then a few nights ago I got to see an actual mating. Was pretty exciting ha ha but I realised there was no bubble nest and I didn't see any eggs being laid, they were twirling around each other and displaying etc..... Is this normal? Was it just a warm up kinda thing? Is it inexperience or is my boy just a pretty face?
  4. Wow thank you for all the advice! Will get drilling and hopefully it helps!!! Cheers
  5. There isn't really any room in the filter! It's got a carbon sponge thing and noodles so it's pretty full, then the water comes out of a spray bar. The filter system is built into the tank so it would be a huge pain to replace the filter. But i'll see what i can do with a sponge or wool
  6. OK so in the quake I lost my Betta/Kuhli loach tank! Luckily for me I didn't lose anyone, the kulhi went straight into my other tank but it also contains Gourami so I couldn't really but my Betta in. I'm a poor student and lost both my jobs in the quake so i'm really a poor student now! I had some money saved so I used it to buy a Jebo 338. The Betta were fairly content to be in a large glass mixing bowl while the Jebo cycled BUT! after it had cycled and I put them in I thought maybe they were depressed because they just sat at the bottom, it took me the whole day to realise it was current from the pump that was making them sit down there. It so strong that they both fight really hard to come and take breaths. I emailed Jebo and they told me to block a certain part of the pump with paper..... :-? Didn't really like that idea but I have no idea what to do! Any ideas?

    Hi :)

Hey everyone, I'm Cat from the shaky city of chch! Have owned tropical fish as a fun hobby for about 5 years now. I've started really getting into my tanks and much to the dismay of my family I spend most of my available funds on tanks, equipment and fish ha ha!! Sadly I've found more and more that pet stores have absolutely no idea what they're talking about and after much internet trawling I eventually come up with an answer. For instance about a year ago I asked what would be good in a tiny 22l i'd been given, the "fish expert" at the pet store told me Gourami would be perfect. I had previously had no experience with Gourami and after much talking and explaining I purchased 2. I got home and got them started in their new home and thought i'd read up about them..... oh no, I had been told they wouldn't get much bigger than the old 50c pieces but boy oh boy are they huge now! So obviously I had to save hard before they got big, I got a bigger 165l which they are in now but since then I research before I buy. Lesson learnt! I still hear people getting given terrible advice which i'm quick to correct (I get kicked out of alot of pet stores!) Anyway, that's me, i'm just hear to learn as much as I can from people who are passionate AND educated Peace Cat
