  5. Finally got all the tanks in and running how I wanted and insulated the ceiling. Pretty happy with the room.

Moved the 8 footer last week full of ikola/empress

Rest of the room. Pretty ugly from all the air pipes but much easier when they are at the front

  6. For me, if you are breeding in mixed highly populated tanks you can't really say with 100% confidence that your fry are pure. I get where you are coming from that with large mixed breeding groups you would think they would keep to themselves but can you be 100% certain they havent crossed. Especially if you have a mix of different peacock breeding groups.

Then if these fry are on sold as pure........

Good call. In my 8 footer full with probably 30 odd electric yellows and a mix of a few other things with large amounts of "pure" strains I have seen many a time breeding with each other. This is why I only take fry out of tanks that are species only. The rest are food:) Would not have believed it without seeing for myself.

  7. Wow, nice shed there. sort of a dream build for me there, for when I have money.

Thanks, yeah has taken a long time to convince my wife I can spend the money:)

Last week finished the stand for the 6footer and did the fill test today. Also had my import of Fish stuff from Kens' including air taps so will try make a start this weekend.

    IMG_0953_zps50d034b2.jpg

    IMG_0954_zps86f7ad0f.jpg

Filled no problems so now gotta get some fish in it.

  8. Have brought 2 * 3 footers, 1 * 4 footer and 1 * 6 footer to fit the remaining parts of the racks and the 6footer i will be starting building a stand for that this weekend. Have followed Jasa's advice and have ordered 100 Air valves from the states and will try get some of the PVC this weekend too :happy2:

Sadly I didnt' get one of the 3 footers in the right place so have to drain before I can get them next to each other but still looking like its getting there.

  9. Pretty sure "likoma" on here was selling lithos on tm a while ago. Your tank is the same length and width as mine. I reckon you would be better off with 1 male dolphin any females in this setup will heighten aggression

Yeah Likoma seems to be the only one breeding them at the moment. I had plenty of empress for sale few months back but no one seemed to want them so stopped keeping the fry. Will start breeding them again if you guys are interested in fry

  10. That many fish in a 450 is gonna be pretty crammed especially when the giraffes get big/breeding. I have done similar stockings in a 400, it looks cool but once you get a big tank like 800 plus you realise you really should have done that to begin with as they have room to get away from the aggressive guys:)

Also I have found that peacocks are pretty shy when they are mixed with haps/mbuna so get wasted fins/sunken bellys from not getting much food

Pretty sure Pupuke aquarium had Ruby Red's when I was there last week :D

  11. LCPN97.jpg

40mm thick wall PVC pipe in a loop around the room. Drill holes and cut threads for the stainless steel taps and then branch off from here to each tank...

    Cheers,

    JaSa

Do you know where you can get those taps from? I have looked at Bunnings and Mitre 10 but can't seem to find them. Maybe i'm just having a man look. Found the same sort of thing which I will order some time this week, if i can't find somewhere else.

    singlelevervalve.jpg

What an amazing fish room! Those huge african tanks will be the eye catchers of the room :D

Lovin this thread looks awesome mate tidy setup, congrats!

    Thanks guys

Looks fantastic - very envious. But... speaking as someone from rock'n'roll Christchurch - erm, I would love to see some bracing / anchoring on those racks. Sure, it might never happen, but then again, we never thought anything would happen here either. Just a thought!

Yeah been thinking about that especially after today. The feet of the racks have holes for bolts to go through so will be looking into sorting that out and maybe putting something along the bottom of the tanks to stop them moving around if it did happen.

  12. Been pretty slack and have been busy getting most of the tanks up and running rather than the air pipes etc. Found that 4foot tanks are really heavy when moving them by youself yesterday:facepalm: You notice also that there is a gap behind all the tanks. I have left about 30cm behind all the tanks so that I can fit in behind and change things around which has proved useful a couple times already.

So plan is to sort out the air next weekend and then order myself 2 * 6 or 2 * 8 footers for the big africans. Haven't decided which size yet but I am thinking bigger is better:)

    IMG_0948_zps07df874f.jpg

When I brought the 3 footers last week I couldn't get 2 the same size so have put them on different shelves and will just have to buy 2 more to make it look right. Couldn't find a 4 footer the right size either so am on the look out.

    2 extra 3 footers needed

    IMG_0950_zpsefa2f2a7.jpg

    1 more 4 footer needed

    IMG_0951_zpscfa284a3.jpg

  13. Have finished the plastering and painting and reattached all the power sockets. Moved all 3 foot and below tanks and purchased another couple 3 footers. Unfortunatley when moving my Lithobates from a small tank to one of the bigger ones I woke up with none still alive so really not happy about that but so far no other casulties on the other 5. Will be getting another two tanks on the weekend and moving in anther 2 * 4 footers. Will put up some photos on the weekend once done

Have decided I will take take some time off soon from work and get the roof insulated, so in the mean time just need to get all the plumbing sorted.

This weekend I will be sorting out some kind of Air piping rather than using the normal air hoses. What does everyone else use? I've been looking at using irrigation piiping around the room then using the standard air hose off of those to go into the tanks. Looks like it will work pretty well.

  14. I am enjoying playing spot the heineken while I look at your pics.

:slfg: I am trying to not post photos with them in it so I don't look like an Alcoholic. Many Heinenkens may have been consumed in the making of this room:)

You can get a dehumidifier where you can set the humidity. Picked one up from the Warehouse for $80 because it was scratched and their display unit 2 years ago. At 25C humans feel comfortable at around 50 to 55% humidity.

I def. would insulate the roof. Every cent spent here will save you money in the long run. Have my roof insulated R2.8, the walls R2.6 and the floor + door R1.4. Heater or the cooling system hardly ever comes on...

Ok so best plan would be to insulate roof with R3.2 (walls are R2.6) and have dehumidifier set to 55% or so. I would then also need an extractor fan installed to transfer air outside or would that not be necessary? Once this is done i shouldn't have moisture or mould issues?

The only issue i have with this is that the room is already hot enough and insulating the roof will make it worse. Im assuming you have a system that you can set a temp and it will heat/cool as needed?

    Cheers

    Michael

  15. Dehumidifier would be the easiest - but it will be a running cost. On the other hand, dry air is easier to heat then humid air which is a plus. Guess you will find out :)

    Have fun,

    JaSa

Would you run the dehumidifier full time or just say a couple hours a day? Im not really too worried about a higher power bill if I need to run it full time.

Also I figure that I will leave the roof uninsulated and no Gib so there will be more air flow out the top of the roof were it joins the walls. Sure in the winter my power will be more but at the moment the room is quite hot so won't cost much to heat in Summer im sure(If the bill gets to high in winter ill have to rethink). Also I am hoping that this will help keep the stink and humid air out? Will need to wait and see I guess:)

  16. If you use a good sealant/undercoat on the gib and then paint with enamal paint it will give a good vapour seal.

Yeah thats what I figured, have discussed with a couple people and they reckon it'll ok with the undercoat and 3 top coats of paint, just have to wait and see i guess. JaSa - interesting reading, if I start to run into problems ill just have to think of something.

So I have only really started to work again on this last weekend and after work as the sparky thought he could take a holiday :sml2:, so in the mean time I decided I would move one of the tanks into our house but the misses didn't agree. She thought it was ugly so off we went to get a "pretty" tank. Came home with a Aqua one 400 Reef with Sump.

Stocking is going to be male only and peacocks only to start with, currently has, Dragoonblood Orange and Coral Red, Lwanda, Ethlewenne, Jacobfreibergi, Lemon Jake and Ruby Red. Will be adding more next weekend.

    IMG_0881_zps01dd70ed.jpg

You can't really see it in the photo but there is now a nice grass algae forming on the top of the Bristlenoses cave.

    IMG_0927_zpsab089432.jpg

Last friday, started digging the trench through to the garage

    IMG_0928_zpsf4089e2d.jpg

What a mission going through the vege garden, easily a meter deep. (Now missing half my veges too:))

    IMG_0929_zps8aa6e487.jpg

Left hand wall and back gib stopped

    IMG_0913_zpsfa6dd3f5.jpg

Sanded and first coat of paint and trimming on top and bottom, you can really see now how unstraight the walls were.

    IMG_0915_zps33149900.jpg

Sat and Sun Wiring all finished and circuit breaker installed in the garage

    IMG_0934_zps05b1d2e3.jpg

    Progress from last night

    IMG_0933_zps9b923d56.jpg

Now just need to finish the Gib top coat then sand, undercoat and paint. Should be ready for moving in tanks on Sunday:)

  17. IMG_0886_zps0db254ef.jpg

Are those by any chance the shelving units from bunnings which come with a kind of mixed wood? Did you replace the wood (and if so, with what?) - we had a water disaster on the original wood which caused it to sink (tanks were sinking in over time anyway) and have now replaced them with plywood. Wondering what the best option is as they're pretty efficient units but I find heavy (even 30+L tanks) to sink inwards?

Yeah they come with some pretty rubbish mdf which if gets wet would be a distaster. The rack in the photo is the ones that can take 250kg per shelf (121cm long). I replaced the wood with 17mm(i think) plywood and coated in polyurethane from memory. Now takes 3 ft tanks at about 150kg and is fine. The metal is pretty thin and doesn't look like it will last forever so changing over to the more solid ones.

  18. You aren't mucking around are you! We are still unpacking boxes I haven't even managed to make it in to the shed to start sorting that, well done, do you want to come and do mine next?

What discusguru said I would be too keen on having the wiring going through touching the metal cladding like that, in reality there are gaps there and the insulation on the wiring should be good enough and it would be subject to abrasion etc but it probably isn't recommended.

60amps is tons! If you are fully insulating and not using heaters you wont use much at all, unless you run a ton of lights or something like that.

Theory was i'd over do it and then there would never be any issues if i needed more sockets. With the wiring i have put holes in the 2*4 on corners and places i think it needs it.

Ron - Still haven't decided what ill be doing on the roof yet. Will definately be insulating some part of it
