  1. Thanks Adrienne, The filter has wool, activated carbon and a 'high surface area plastic slide in bit'.... thats the best way I can describe it sorry, I think it acts in much the same way as the the ball thingys... The wool is FILTHY brown, I have changed it once, but am not sure whether the brown is the good bacteria that I want in there so am hesitant to keep changing it... Any advice you could give would be greatly appreciated
  2. Yeah, greyish... Will take a trip to HFF this weekend. Would just like to catagorically state for the record that these fish are not pink and, as far as I can tell from the link provided, are not genetically modified. Here is what they looked like in my old tank: http://i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff4 ... G_1787.jpg
  3. P.S. Thanks Allister_B, will give that stuff a go
  4. Jeez, you guys really know how to freak a guy out!!! I'm quite an avid conservationist, was about to take up a crusade against all animates everywhere!!
  5. Yes the UV tube is pink.... No the fish are not pink at all.... Yellow with black dots and glod with black stripes.... Here is a close up of them... under the pink light.... http://i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff4 ... h_0313.jpg Please tell me if these are illegal or not
  6. no, not pink.... Give me 5 mins, I'll take some better photos....
  7. Yes, both Gravel and sand were thoroughly rinsed, I don't think this is the problem as it has been getting worse from about a month in.... Wha??? Please explain.... Animates can sell illegal fish???
  8. uuuuhhhhh..... not danio? Thats what they were sold to me as from animates......
  9. Hi Guys, So this tank has been going about 3 months now, 91 litres, 6 Danio, 3 Striata loaches and 4 little catfish, random plants from animates in the back corner and some sort of sword in the front (a couple of little "crypt'?s that have been munched somewhat). Water chemistry fine, religiously change approx 30% of the water weekly, filtration = Aqua one hang on 500L/hr. Lighting = a 30 cm UV tube and a 60cm strip light that doesn't give off as much light as I would like. Ever since I started this tank the water has been cloudy, I did my research and figured it was just the driftwood (from HFF), but now it seems the problem is getting worse and you can see from the photo's that the plants are covered in a furry algae. I would love to have crystal clear water in this tank, but don't really know what I'm doing wrong... the only thing I can think off is that I don't have enough light? but thought I'd ask you guys before going and buying expensive new lights... Any help would be greatly appreciated. FNZAS keeps saying my pics are too big so here are some direct links: http://i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff4 ... 0112-1.jpg http://i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff4 ... 2_0107.jpg http://i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff4 ... 5_0110.jpg http://i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff4 ... 6_0111.jpg
  10. Cheers, Nice tip 8) Will have to check out the HFF in Mt Roskill. Do they have plants and substrate stuff other than fish?
  11. Haha, yeah I haven't dared peek in there yet! My wallets struggling enough as it is!
  12. Hi everyone, Very new to this, but have always loved fish and water and pretty much everything to do with it all. I've finally settled down up in Auckland and decided it's time I had some fish in my life. I went to animates in mt Eden and bought a 25l blue planet set up. I set it all up and a week later (when the kind lady at animates said my water was ready) I had 3 striped danio swimming around a couple of weeks later they were joined by 3 spotted danio. A week ago I managed to get hold of a 90l tank so am now extremely excited to set it up! I'm hoping to get lots of plants (i've been inspired by p44's pictures in the freshwater forum) and some nice colourful tropical fish. At the moment all I have is the tank, no lights, heaters, filters, substrate so any advice in these areas would be greatly appreciated I've enjoyed browsing the forums since I joined up and am amazed at the wealth of knowledge contained in these pages. I looke forward to sharing my aqaurium experiences with all you guys and ask for your patience when I ask silly questions
  13. WOw, they sound amazing I'll definately go check them out!! Thanks heaps to everyone who has helped, I'll post some pictures when it's all set up
