  1. Update: A week later.. :bounce: I've added a DIY CO2 Setup, a little crude, but will do until I get a proper diffuser. Painted the back, thanks dyinggoldfish. and bought new lights. I'm looking after my friends fish while their new substrate is installed, 5 Neons, 2 Zebra Danios, Guppy, Bristlenose Pleco, and 2 swords, ontop of that I just bought 3 Oto's, so I'm busy doing water changes almost 5% everyday, got to be real careful, lots of fish and a new tank. Thoughts? suggestions?
  2. Update: done a whole bunch of research, I'm still a n00b when it comes to plants but this has been great fun, and I am lapping up the chalange. and I can't wait till I get some fishes, hopefully I will get 2 zebra danios tonight, from a friend. Thanks to Caryl I have new plants :bounce: Red Rotala, Dwarf Sag, Crypts, Java Fern, Java Moss, Tiger Lotus, and Hygrophila angustifolia. I need more light for these plants, have just ordered a new 10K fluro light, the pictures look brighter than is actually is. Needs a bit of tiding up. Oh noes, I think now I want a bigger tank... or another one.. hmmm
  3. Friend of mine has 2 kuhli loaches and want to change their substrate to this: http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pets-animals/Fish/Stones-pebbles/auction-289096716.htm Will this marble chip be too coarse?
  4. Its called Midnight 0.1-1.4mm fine grade (thanks to petstuff101) Edit: added leftover substrate, now its about 1.5 inches.
  5. its about an inch thick, hard to see in this photo, is an inch enough?
  6. Hey everyone, I have decided to start a planted tank :bounce: yay, I haven't got any experience with aquatic plants, I was inspired by a whole bunch of planted tanks on youtube, and thought you all might like to watch my tanks set-up progress. Bought this tank off a friend, AquaOne AR620, came with the driftwood. Just added some cuttings of Hygrophila angustifolia, hopefully they take off. A bit boring at the moment I know.. I need a background to hide the cables, lol What do you all think so far? any suggestions? Dan
  7. Hi all, Friend bought this plant from the LFS was labled as water wisteria but, googled it and obviously its not. So what is it?
  8. Found this on youtube, hilarious. Enjoy
  9. Yea sorry bout that, didn't have all the details, its not my tank.. The tank came with pleco, female guppy, 2 neons, and 2 kuhli loaches the 4 neons were added first with the zebra danios then the 4 swords a week later and finally the male guppy this is all over about 2 weeks. here is a photo of the tank as it is now. sorry bout the bad lighting
  10. Agreed, I have a friend who may want to buy some Guppys later this year, Ill PM you if you don't mind.
  11. I was very careful when lowering the pH I only changed the value by .2 (BTW pH was 7.4 not 7.8 as I posted sorry) The Pet Shop only wanted to sell me a ammonia testing kit for $31, but also suggested to make water changes more frequently. Going to do 5-10L every couple of days for a while. The Plant is called Water Wisteria and it was not sterilized or cleaned before putting it into the tank (prob a bad mistake).
  12. Got one heater on order. hopefully will arrive tomorrow morning. I will have to buy a test kit for ammonia and nitrate. will go to pet shop soon. Don't know, bought from the pet shop, will find out and post back soon. I have a PH testing kit, and the test shows high alkaline levels. Kit comes with pH up and pH down I think its made my Aqua One. Thanks for helping, you guys are awesome. Dan
  13. Hi I am posting on behalf of a friend. Its a new tank set-up about 1 month ago its a 60L tank heater is set to 28c water temp stays at about 24-25, however had had a few cold nights where tank would have gone down to 22c Fish in tank are: 1x brislenose pleco 2x Guppy Male/Female 2x Kuhli Loaches 2x Zebra Danios 6x Neon Tetras 2x Male Swordtails 2x Female Swordtails A week ago a male guppy was introduced along with a new plant, three days later it died. The new plant was introduced about 5 days before both swords died. Few days ago a male swordtail died, so did a 50% water change tested PH it was 7.8 so adjusted it down a little. Last night a Female Swordtail died, was looking sad over the last few days, slow swimming and the male was never interested in her. (male is interested in other smaller female). I have recommended a small water change everyday, to make sure it is clean, and to add another heater. No fish show any signs of disease, I think it could be the plant, going to take it out later today. Please post if you think you might know what is happening, or if you have any ideas of what to do next, thanks.
  14. Looking at purchasing some plants. These are the plants that I would like to start with: (sorry don't know the technical names) Red Pine, Hairgrass, Java Fern, Java Moss, and Christmas Moss. And heading out to the beach next weekend to see if I can get some driftwood and rocks. Then going make up a DIY CO2 generator/reactor Probably wont get any fish for a few weeks, till the tank is set-up. Know of anyone here with some hairgrass for sale? I have posted in the Trade and Exchange Section.
