  1. Great Sorted then. So if i go for two of them could i consider a green severum also to go with the gold severum i already have? That will give me green, yellow and blue colours going on. Will another severum be okay with my golden or be trouble? Thanks heaps!
  2. Thanks for the replies. I googled both the fish you suggested and like what a saw and read on the electric blue dempseys. How many would you all suggest buying? Do they do better alone or as a pair or group? Dont want my severum getting picked on again...the angels gave him a run around. Thanks again!
  3. Tank is currently 1000mm long,700mm high and 600mm front to back. I have just re housed my angel fish as they were getting abit aggresive and want to get some more fish to take there place. Current tank mates are 1 elephantnose (20cm) ,1 gold nugget pleco(small), 3 clown loaches(6cm ish) 10 colombian tetra, 1 gold severum(medium size, very placid/friendly) and 4 small albino catfish. I am looking at upgrading to a larger tank(5 foot) as clowns etc get bigger. At this stage i just want to look at some options to take the angels place....pieceful fish...but interesting and active. Im thinking a couple more feature fish as opposed to a schooling fish. What ideas you all got? Thanks for any advice in advance Pete
  4. It is 1000mm long,700mm high and 650mm front to back. Lots of hiding places and plants for them.
  5. Does anyone have any experience with these fish or any advice for me? When i originally set up my tank any fish of a decent size i introduced the elephant nose took a instant dislike so i decided to get young and let then grow. Has been fine until recently,my gold severum is getting to a good size now(about 1/2 lenght of elephant nose) has been getting chased by him. The severum is really placid and just cruises around... Is there anything i can do? I have tried changing tank around and still no change. Thanks heaps for any replies. Pete

    Filteration

Hey all! While back i posted a question about running a 2nd filter on my tank and after some helpful advice a got a 2nd fluval 405 for the tank which has done wonders...the water is so much clearer! Now i want more The question a want to ask is would running one of the bigger internal filters as well be of any benefit to me? (i have a corner where it can be hidden away out of sight) or would i be wasting my money? My tank is 450L and it is what a would consider stocked and just want things to be as good as possible for the fish. Im not looking at a alternative to water changes( i do 20% every 2nd day) i just want best possible water condidions i can get. If there are any other options i could look at? Thanks heaps! Pete
  7. Hey ive noticed that my elephant nose at odd times will rub himself up against a rock like he is itching himself? Is this normal behavior for them? He looks fine,no marks or nicks on skin that i can see.
  8. Yup lots of wood...he is slowly improving...he now has his head out the hole checking everything out...
  9. Yeh it is... What are you feeding your one? Im feeding mine those alge wafers....is that enough? Some greens(cucumber)?
  10. I have plenty of driftwood, rock caves, plants etc and all tankmates are quiet... Guess its one of those things.. As long as he is happy
  11. Ive had him for about 8 weeks now and he has taken residence in a opening in one of the bits of drift wood. He only comes out at night when its so dark i cant get a good look at him,i have tried blue light to simulate moonlight and that still didnt get him out.Is there anything else i can do to make him any less nervous? Or is that just the nature of the fish until they are older? I remember my dad having one when i was younger and it was always out and about. Thanks Pete.
  12. Thanks for all the advice. Will leave that idea alone then as i have spent so much time getting my plants growing and would be guttered if they got eaten.
  13. Is that all kinds? Thats no good cause i have plants... Is that the case if you keep them well fed as well?
  14. Does anyone have them? I saw them today and thought they may bring abit of colour into the tank...anyone had any experience with them? Thanks Pete
  15. I was just on you tube looking at some fish stuff and came across so many videos of people fighting fish in a tank...putting a young oscar in with 6 red bellied piranas and taping it being riped to pieces while still alive...makes me sick! If only there was a way to stop people like that owning fish
  16. Thanks for the replies Have now got the two fluvals running and bought a powerhead also and so far so good...can see a difference after only 24 hours
  17. Yeh they are rated at 300lph so that gives me a ratio of nearly 6. Its only stocked with 20 fish(listed in first post) but if its getting to much for the filter now i can only imagine what it will be like when they get to adult size. So if i get this second 405 running and a power head in to stir things up abit and still not enough then what would my next step be? a third 405?haha.Or another option should i invest in a large size internal(i think fluval do a model with media also) instead of the powerhead giving me two 405s and the internal? Appreciate the replies...really fustrating when you put so much work into a tank and you can see it slipping Phoneix 44 Your outlet on the right hand back corner,is it pumping toward the front glass?
  18. Because of it being pretty stocked now and only running the one 405 lately ive been doing daily water changes of 10% and i feel like im fighting a losing battle. Im constantly vacuming the sand. Could it be a water flow thing? Could a powerhead b a option just to stir things up abit and get the dirty stuff toward the inlets? The tank is 700mm deep....im guessing thats making life abit harder for me also.. Any tips appreciated, ild prefer to spend a ltil $ and have it sorted. Pete
  19. How far under the water do you have your outlets? I have mine approx 2 inches under the surface, that ok? It has been the last week or so i have noticed abit of bits and pieces in the water, just not keeping as clean as it used to So fingers crossed this second filter will do it. One more question...what media would you reccomend? I have the media that came with the filter and i put in a pouch of chem zorb i think its called as the drift wood was tainting the water but that sorted it out so same sort of setup in the second one minus the cham zorb?
  20. Hey all. Just bought a 2nd fluval 405 for my tank(450L) I know i should have a intake now at each end of the tank but what about the outlets? Both at one end?wouldnt you get a bit of funny water movement with a outlet at seperate ends? And do you think two 405s are enough for a tank this size once all my fish are at adult size? (4 angels,10 colombian tetra,1 gold severum,1 large elephant nose,4 ltil albino catfish and a gold nugget pleco) or should a get a desent internal as well? Thanks for any replies Pete
  21. Is there anything commercially available? Guessing some sort of dim blue light? Just want to see if it will help bring the night fish out in a sort of light i can see them Ideas? Thanks Pete
  22. Yup Pete built tank...he did a great job to! I have not noticed any change in ph...a few people i have spoken to suggested the kids play sand as they had been using it in all their tanks without any problems. Really easy to keep clean also!
  23. Thanks for the help Phoenix44! :-) Dave and Amy-Yup its kids playsand bought from my local garden centre, i am pleased with the colour it turned out and was cheap also whichis a bonus...right here is the rest of the pics! Will post more when i get a good pic of the elephant nose(he is about 20cm) and the new angels and pleco i have since bought. Below is my gold severum...only young but the colour is getting more and more bright. Elephant nose below.
  24. ok here is the pics. Hope they work, was unable to get pic of the new gold nuget pleco as he is sat in a opening in some drift wood. The not so good pic is of the elephant nose...hard one to get pic of also!
