They were bought as Bristlenose Plecostomus. So I would assume(hope) that they are Bristlenose.... The largest is about 4cm, but nothing showing. The other is about 3cm, and again nothing. ta

Hi When do these start developing their bristles. I bought 2 from Animates a while ago, and neither have any bristles. So, at the moment I'm assuming that they are either A: juveniles B: female or of course both A and B... But, if they are male, I'd like to know then the bristles develop. ta

Hi water quality is good. Did stop feeding for a couple of days and just gave peas after we lost for second one. Then they all seemed ok. Yesterday we noticed one of the larger ones wasn't really moving much, just stationary in the tank and another smaller one had trouble staying upright. Moved 3 of them into a container floating on the top of the tank and added some Furan. Then this morning 2 were dead and 1 was still alive but still not good. Food we've been giving recently is a standard container of tropical flakes bought from Animates. We'll stop feeding and just put a couple of peas into the main tank. Thanks Dave

Oh well. all my other glowlights have come down with it and within 24hrs are dead! I have 1 left but I don't hold out much hope. All my other fish are OK and this goes for the Neons as well. Any info on what can cause such a rapid death? Dave

Just to update. The male swordtail has now settled down with the girls, and doesn't pester as much, Everyone in the Guppy kingdom seems happy and well, and we have 3 littlies swmming around and doing well... Dave

Hi I've now lost 2 Glowlight Tetras to what I'm thinking is a swim bladder infection, as they stop being able to swim upright, lie on their sides on do lovely tail spins.... The first one I removed from the tank into a container and treated with aquarium salt, but he died after about 3 days. The second one was found a bit off keel last night, and by this morning was dead. so, what can cause swim bladder infections, and what can be done to treat it. ta

I've got a guppy boy with a ragged tail as well. Seems happy enough. His ragged tail was caused by a fellow male guppy who was a bully who has since died, now the tail is (very) slowly recovering.... Dave

How good are the fry of avoiding hungry mouths? I think one of ours gave birth, after seeing about 3 fry hiding amongst the plants. How many do they normally give birth too at anyone time?
-
ok, ta. I have noticed that he does like to 'show off', goes sideways, bends himself into a curve and fans his tail and top fin. Only saw him doing this once the girls were in the tank.

We did seperate him for a bit, into a container floating on the top of the tank, but it was clear, and he was quite frantic to get back into the main tank, If he was a jumper, I reckon he'd done it (had tetras which did this!) Guess we'll just have to keep our eye on him. How can you tell if they'll mate? Dave

Ta, yep, plenty of plants and a couple of objects, so they do get the chance of somewhere to hide. Thanks.

Hi We have what I know are 2 male fantail guppies, and what I think is 1 male swordtail guppy. I have since introduced 2 females. The fantails don't seem very interested, but the swordtail is constantly chasing them around, and it looks like he is attempting to nip the underside of her tail, just behind the belly. Is this normal behaviour for a male around a female? If it is then fine, but if its bullying then he'll need a new home.... Thanks Dave

Hmm... The tank is sort of fully stocked. I've got 2x plecos 3 male guppies, 1 swordtail guppy 6 glowlight tetras and about 6 million snails. The tank is 600x300x300mm Would the clown loaches fit and get on?

Wonder if their would be a market for that.... The neons held their colours well.
-
OK, so whats the best way of making a snail trap?
-
turned out I don't have to worry about the vodka, the neons died, so I drank it. Thanks Dave
-
But of course! Never leave home with it!

Hi I have a plethora of snails, quite small, I think they might be apple snails. They have a white-transparent shell and breed like there's no tomorrow. What is the easiest way to cull them. So far I manage to remove lots while changing the water, but it seems endless. My plants are now starting to suffer. Some more than others, and I must say they do a good job of turning my plants into sticks and random floating leaves! Any help would be appreciated. Dave

At least I don't keep Petunias!
-
When you do this, do they think, "ooh, whats that big thing coming towards me, I wonder if it'll be my friend...." SPLAT! Thanks for the tips. One has died naturally overnight, so I now only have two to deal with...

I know, I think we have reached that point.... I don't want to, but I think it may be kinder on the fish. The question is. What is the most humane way of doing this? Dave

Hi I have 4 neons and 6 glowlight tetras. 1 of the neons got a white fungal looking disease on his back, at the base of his tail. From this 2 of the other neons got it around the mouth, which made me think it was cotton mouth. I've managed to seperate them. So far they've had this for about 2 weeks, colour still OK and eating OK, still lively. I've tried the following meds: Meth blue Rock salt and after 2 weeks of this there was no change, so I've done a major water change on them a couple of times to try and remove the meth blue and no I'm just starting with furran2. What is the best treatment? How long should it be before it starts to clear up? I've got them in an icecream container floating on the top of the tank. All the other fish are fine. Dave

tank size is 600mmx300mmx300mm. Tank setup is quite new, so I have about 6-7 young plants. 2 airstones at both back corners. Carbon filter. Fish are 2 bristlenose plecos, 4 neon tetra 3 male fantail Guppies and 6 glowlight tetras. I did have a good quantity of snails which came in with the plants, but they seem to have died out, I can only find 1 or 2 around the tank, and there are no eggs around now. We feed once a day, either flakes, bloodworm or a pellet. Any help would be appreciated. I'm thinking about getting some more plants and snails, possible with red ramshorn or malaysian trumpet. Dave

Hi Is it normal to have quite a build up of green spot algae in the tubes which the air stones sit in? There is also quite a bit on the plants and stones. I did have quite a few snails, but these seem to have all died out... Should I get some more to keep this algae under control? Thanks
