  1.

    Whatever!!!

A common goldfish / comet etc optimal temp is between 20 - 22 degrees

A fancy goldfish, ie.. fantail, oranda etc is more suited to a tropical condition as they don't do well in cold conditions.

I give advice on my own experiences of my years of fish keeping, over the years i have tried many things have found certain things don't work, all i care about is the well being of the fish and it's up to sandaz to decide now what she thinks is best for her fish .. if she decides to keep it and put it into a tropical tank then fine, but I do hope you take on what we have said about having plenty of oxgyen.

  2. Yes i have also seen alot of photos of how the asians keep there fish and how they get sold, in the wild is a different story though usually in fresh flowing water that are highly oxygenated so I would say the higher temps wouldn't effect them .... but in a tank is a different story.

So you're telling sandaz that it is ok to put her fish into a tropical climate, without telling her to increase oxgyen and flow.????

Um Mel, maybe you should do some reading online before you say keeping goldfish in a heated tank is not a good thing and that we are giving bad advice, I have heard of a lot of people keeping them successfully in tanks with temps upto 28c, most tropical tanks will be around 24c which is no more than your pond heats up to on a hot summer day.

Your goldfish were probably stressed and gasping for air because you didn't cycle the tank and didn't put enough oxygen in there with them, nothing to do with temp, did you think of that?

Maybe next time you want to say that someone's advice is wrong you might want to back up your theory with some facts or evidence.

FYI my tank was cycled had alot of aeration - my fishroom is kept at a constance temp of 24 I heat the room not the tanks. The tank was at exactly the same temp as my pond before putting them in - I was trying to maintain that tank at 20 with the help of alot of ice blocks and fans blowing over the surface.

there is a saying in here that was said along time ago ... there is a difference between " just surviving to thriving" sure the fish will survive, but in my experience it won't thrive.

  3. WOW i am shocked that people here are advising that it is ok to keep cold water fish in tropical conditions!!!!! That advise is just as bad as the petshop telling her that her fish will stop growing

i certainly wouldn't do it and i would never tell someone I know that it's ok.

Yea sure they may seem like they are doing ok, but when i had my fish in the fishroom (controlled heated room) for the short time we were upgrading the pond, my fish were stressed out, gasping etc ... I was constantly putting blocks of ice trying to keep the temp down, fans over the tank etc...

  4. Hiya, 20 litres, i would say it is too small for your fish. he sounds like a real beauty.

For goldfish ideally they would be much happier outside in a pond, but not everyone can have a pond. An upgrade of tank of at least 100+ litres ... but bigger is better for the size of the fish, I guess you will have to get the size you have room for and can afford, and bigger tanks are alot easier to keep clean - keep an eye on trademe, you can usually find nice and affordable setups - i would recommend a tank of at least 100 litres no smaller.

  5. Both average cheapo brands AFAIK. Power consumption should be an important consideration when purchasing a pump, look at more than just LPH and price, you may find a more expensive one would pay for itself in a year or two with the savings.

Totally agree, I just purchase a new pond pump, was looking at the sunsun brand i looked at the 1400lph & 2000lph - both were 55w :o .. the pondmaster 2300lph was only 28w, but will save me $$ in the long run with power cosumption, so pays to consider that.

  6. Well thats a thought, I had my fish in the concrete pond for about 1 1/2 years and never had a problem, goldfish do prefer a higher PH, my in-laws also have a concrete pond that has been running for well over 15yrs no problems there either .. being a reptile enclosure will the higher PH effect them, my understanding reptiles will tolerate a range of different water conditions ... my turtle was ok in the concrete pond.

We just used the concrete you mix yourself with builders mix then left it for properly about 2 weeks before it's first fill.

  7. goldfish normally keep it in check, also a bit of shade, if its going mental its because theres excess nutrients in the system, once you main plants take off it should slow down

i have it growing wildly in my "bathtub pond" and just put netfulls into my main pond as abit of food for the fish and turtle .... and the africans like it too, but I like it contained and not wondering all over the pond, looks to messy

  8. Mr Turtle is extremely friendly if i stand at the side of the pond he will come right up to the side to see me. at night time he goes back into his tank in the fishroom... wouldn't want him to get cold :D

Looking good. Why not use black hose instead of that bright green?

Perhaps you should bring your turtle to meet the one here and entice it out of my pond :happy2:

:slfg: ok then i'll pack his bags and send him by snail mail .. he'll have way to much fun in your pond.

Yea i thought about either the dark green or black hosing, but this is what i had on hand the other day.

  9. And 3 more photo's of the pond pictures taken today...

If you're wondering, the green blanket is azolla and i have used a garden hose floating to keep in one area, i like the stuff but didn't want it all over the place lol .. anyone know of something else i can use instead of the unsightly hose?

  10. Hi all, I am not sure what has happened to the first pictures I posted when i started this thread .. but i thought i'd do abit of an update as alot has happen to my pond ..

Firstly here are afew pics of what it originally looked like, before it's renovation ..

    2012-11-09%252012.40.37.jpg

Over the xmas break, we decided to give it a makeover, .. well really not intending on it, but we knew it had a leak or leaks so really needed to find and fix the leak ... so this is what happened

    2012-12-31%252015.00.09.jpg

So deciding that we like the way it looked and thinking "lets make it bigger and deeper on one end" this happened...

We decided to line it this time with heavy duty polythene, simply because we didn't want the hassle of it leaking again and it was cheaper lining it than sealing it. Pond now works out to roughly hold 5000 litres.

Mr turtle checking it all out

Getting the plants and fish in ...

Planter box going the length of the pond for the marginal plants .. yet to be planted

    2013-01-10%252013.30.20.jpg

There is still alot more to do, the rocks on the top still need to be put on and garden around the pond is yet to go in ... we are paving/landscaping our backyard so as that work progresses the pond will have work done aswell.

  11. DOH!! just actually 'read' this thread, yes i think netting is out of the question, your plants are to thick and he would just scarper as soon as he saw you.

My turtle is fine with fish, but he has been raised from day one with different kinds of fish. However my brothers red ear is a killing machine will catch and eat anything in his tank, so i suspose it depends on how friendly it is, keep it feed so it's not bothered. good luck.

  12. I put my turtle out in my pond everyday, he's a very friendly wee guy though and comes up to me when i stand at the side of the pond, but when i need to get him out at night and he's gone to deep I just net him out. Hmm you may have problems seeing as your plants are so thick. I would try the net approach when hes up like in your picture, .. and be quick about it :D

  13. we have done our pond in concrete, we just dug the hole to the shape/size we wanted then put a decent thickness of concrete never used chicken mesh. we also never used sealer, but depending on how well you do your concrete mix you might want to concider a sealer, but no it's not nessary .. we never had any problems apart from a leak from under a rock.

  14. I seriously doubt whatever it was killed adult fish. If it was a dragonfly larvae definitely not. If it was a leach, definitely not unless in huge numbers which I expect you'd have noticed. If it was a slug definitely not, because it would have drowned. If it was a hydra definitely not because they can't kill much more than fry.

Thankyou Ira, you're comment has ease my mind .. I do get alittle sqmish when I find bugs in the pond, i know most are harmless and properly good food for the fish.

    good idea

this is the one that I am meaning

    Nope wasn't one of these.

:dunno: if i do happen to find the creature again or anything freaky looking .. i'll be sure to take a picture

  15. Toebiter (Dobson fly larvae) creepy lil guys, had one nip me while examining the gut content of a trout

    images?q=tbn:ANd9GcR-R4fHSV0Un2_xULOji3R7ckcUgOtR-06SRHkyVjU6clXDnMYfug

Nope didn't look like this, my creature was clear like a gel see through .. I had a hunt yesterday and couldn't find it. i do have alot of dragonflies hanging about the ponds so am wondering if it was a deformed dragonfly larvae of some sort :dunno:

After finding this creature it has me alittle worried, just before xmas I had a disaster in my pond where I lost over half my fish population I suspected something nasty in my pond, now i am wondering if this little critter is to blame. All fish I lost were most of my breeding stock so fairly large fish of 8cm and bigger.
