You know, I was sitting in the Atrium at CPIT today and looking at the signs advertising the courses available .. one of them was "Next Step Center for Women" and I seriously thought where's the next step center for men? There are some men who suffer as badly as some women and yet they don't get recognised. And the rest of what you said was spot on. To the OP - sorry to hear what that guy is going through, must be a really tough time. I suppose the only thing you can do is stick beside him and defend him to the end.

Hmm maybe I'm guilty of over feeding my fish too  I have a JBL pot of food with a 'click' top that you click (obviously) and it dishes out a measured amount of food. I do that once a day, for quite a few fish (10 Neons, 2 dwarf gouramis, 2 female fighters, 4 platys) but they're all small/young. I also give my BN a sinking algae disk every second/third day. I have a separate tank with 9 Guppies and the guy at the fish shop said Guppies clean their gut every 20 minutes?! Do they need more food? I give them some food every day (try to vary it between granules, bloodworms and a disk thing I stick on the side) but is that enough/too much? And if the amonia is at 0.25 - is that really bad? I mean, can fish live in it? I would've thought it was livable but not desirable?

Haha yeah that was the plan! I was so gutted when I realised she'd already given birth and I seriously thought I'd have saved mroe than one but .. no. Just the one! And s/he is fighting fit! And thanks my cheap camera surprises me sometimes.
-
Hmm ok, I'll look out for it Thanks!
-
Hmm will have to keep my eye on them. I have a few pregnant Guppies too. So what angle do you look at them to see a square?
-
Yeah, I saw one dart into the hole in the drift wood before I tried rescuing this one. We had a good shuffle of the gravel where the moss was but no luck. I hope there are others, I'd hate to think I let them all get eaten

Say hello to my latest tank edition .. I got given a pregnant Platy (orange with mickey mouse markings) by BnB and noticed the other day she was look rather .. unpregnant. So this morning I came into the lounge and was watching the fish .. then a tiny fry darted out of the Java Moss balls I have at the bottom and proceeded to get gobbled by a Neon. I was shocked, then gutted! My first encounter with a fry and it was so short. So I bought a guppy breeder plastic box thing and scooped the Java Moss out and sorta shuffled it around in a bucket of the tank water and managed to save this one. And I mean only one! So I hope it survives I guess the others just got eaten as she was spawning. Never mind, I am wiser now so will move the female into the trap when she looks really pregnant. The other fish kept pecking at the box trying to eat the fry so I put a bit of Java Moss in with it for it to hide in.

Only asking because I've read that it's not ok. *shrugs* all gotta learn sometime right? Thanks everyone
-
Ok .. since I put her* into the tank she has developed a thick black line along the length of her body in the middle .. is this a good sign?! *assuming the fish is a 'she' of course.

I certainly hope so thanks!

I took advantage of Animates again this weekend and bought a pair of Dwarf Gouramis - something I've wanted for a long time. I bought these ones on the advice that it would be better to get a pair - male and female. I was told the one I wanted the most was a male and that the females (lots of them in there) had rounder bottom tails and the back of the dorsal fin was more rounded. The guy then walked away to serve someone else and I was left with a girl who didn't really know about fish and I had to choose a female. Now that I've got them home they kinda look similar in the fact that their dorsal fins are both pointy but I would just like a confirmation of what sex this one is? Sorry for the slightly blurry photos, I'm starting to learn how impossible it is to get photos of fish! They're still in the bag getting used to my tank temp. Thanks
-
Oh right! Interesting. Might have to think about another couple of females and a male then! Not as if I need another excuse for more fish

Her long black stripes still haven't disappeared .. is she still stressed?
-
Haha yeah I figured it wouldn't be too much of a strain at 26*, but thought I'd better check incase there was some toxic chemical released in warmed acrylic or something. Cheers everyone

Never thought of this. I've recently passed my goldfish on to my Mum but that's definitely a good idea for her to think about. My fish have always seemed happy and fine on the floating pellets I give them but veggies seem like a good alternative.

It's attached with a suction cup but I'll have to check if it's actually touching the side when I get home (or if Romeo sees this while he's at home .. ) It's set to 26 and the ambient temp in that room sits at about 21 so it shouldn't be working overtime.
-
Phew. Had a slight panic when I read it was acrylic somewhere because I thought some acrylic tanks weren't made to be heated. That's calmed the nerves though Thanks
-
Do you mean the heater glass being pressed against the side or it being suction cupped to the side?
-
And if it's acrylic, is it ok to be heated? I actually struggled to find anywhere that mentions what it's made of (even the Aqua One website didn't say!) and when I did I got conflicting information. The one I bought yesterday seemed very light (like acrylic) but says it's ok for a heated tank? :-? :-?

I had a really fat goldfish who I was feeding every day. I fed him some bloodworms to 'clean him out' then fed him every second or third day and now he's a normal gold fish I would hazzard a guess at over feeding but thats just from personal experience.
-
What about Guppies? Does anyone know what sort of tank size you'd need to breed them?
-
Ahh ok, that makes sense thanks for clarifying it.

Cool, she has already shown signs of darkening .. her tail colours have certainly come out more as shes become more accustomed to the tank. I just measured her, she's about 4cm including her tail. Nice. I googled female fighters and most look the same so I thought maybe it just depends on what male they breed with as to what offspring they have. But if she might be a veiltail that would be nice because I actually prefer them Haha ok, point taken

Sorry for the second post in a day but .. this is my female fighter. I was told her black stripes would fade as she ages and her colour will come through stronger. Do you think she will be blue with a bit of red in her fins? I was told she could be those colours which is kinda why I chose her. Is there a way to tell what type of fighter she will be? This question just occured to me, I guess I should've asked at the pet shop, but the pet shop also had a short tailed male in with the females thinking that it was a female so .. yeah. Also, is there any way of guessing how old she is? Cheers, Jo
